sorry guys, but you are all wrong. completely wrong. this song is accutally about an awkward car ride to the tweeter center in philly to see cold play. and he was driving with his ex at the time .. want the proof here it is.

Adam and Fred did a kerrang acoustic session in 06' when they played this they said what it was about. It's about Adam and his ex-girlfriend; when they were together they bought tickets to see Coldplay and once they broke up they still went together and it was a long drive, which was awkward etc. Thats exactly what it's about.

emm..actually this song has nothing to do with john and shaun leaving..i saw an interview with adam where he explained that this was about going to a concert with a girl hed broken up with and how it was awkward..he admited he skrewed her over and thats why she didnt speak to him for the whole journey hence the "You kept still until the long drive home. You slept safe and close to the window" line.

I have pretty complex interpretation of this Song, this is just what I pictured in my head when I heard this song.

It's told from 2 different viewpoints, A boyfriend, and a Serial Killer. A couple is coming back home from a long road trip. It's late at night, and they are traveling down a long, isolated stretch of road, and the Boyfriend has premonitions that something is about to go very, wrong. "You kept still until the long drive home, Slept safe and close to the window. Well, I've got a bad feeling about this."

So then their car breaks down on the side of the road, they have no cell service. So the boyfriend travels on foot to try and find the nearest service station to phone for help, he tells the Girlfriend to stay put in the car until he gets back. The next part is the Roadside Serial Killer who hunts late at night when he finds people stuck on the roadside needing help. His thirst for Hunger grows during the part "Anyone will do tonight. Close your eyes, just settle, settle." So as he's driving in his truck he pulls over next to the disabled vehicle with the Girlfriend in it, and then smashes the window open with a crowbar, and murders the Girlfriend slowly. Telling her to close her eyes just settle, settle.  
The boyfriend is racing back from a Gas station, he already feels something is going wrong and he keeps repeating. "I've got a bad feeling about this." When he comes back to their car, he discovers his girlfriend in a bloody mess, laid out in the front side of the car. He's screaming I've got it bad! He wakes up on the pavement next to the car, with his dead girlfriend beside him" Was the Roadside serial killer a dream. Did he really kill his Girlfriend in a fit of rage, and pass out? A Decade Under the Influence.

well first I think the song title "a decade under the influence" is in reference to Adam in his apt going dealing with maybe not having a TBS anymore, because I read in somewhere that during the hiatus, he would make frequent trips to the corner store...so that time during the hiatus could seem like "a decade under the influence"

and now the song could just be the times when he knew John was leaving and "to hell with you and all your friends" could possibly have Jesse Lacey thrown in there since of course he took sides with John...and finally "I thought of you and my worst brings out the best in you"...that could be a lot of the rumors about Adam being an ass to John's sister and that was one of the rumors about him leaving and that brings out the best in John which means forming Straylight Run...

so yea, thats my take on the song and i could be completely wrong

hey cato its me from the forum I AM THE ONE WHO GOT THE RECORDING/RIP OF THE SONG, IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME ASK CATO11087, HE RIPPED THE RECORDING TO MP3 FOR ME

so if u happen to hear this song before it comes out on cd thank me because i got the recording from my radio station, which is the only station that had it becuase of promotion for TBS
