Heir Apparent Lyrics

I came back to my old city
With fierce determination
And I couldn't find my way out of the station

It's all changed
You were there
Departing, starting
A trek I had once took
With that "no-one's gonna stop me when I feel this way" look

Apparent, apparent
Heir apparent
You think it's so easy, I tell you - it isn't
But you may change minds with your winning smile

I fell down in my old city
Such sad degradation
So I tried to make my way back to the station

You were still there
Gleaming and leaving
Wide-eyed and awestruck
Saying "How can anybody hate me
If I love them first off ?"

Apparent, apparent
Heir apparent
You think it's so easy, I tell you - it isn't
But you may change minds with your winning smile

Heir, heir, heir
Heir, heir, heir
Heir, heir, heir
Heir, heir, heir
But you may be OK, I don't know

I'll see you back here
In a few bruised years
Pray
I'll see you here
I'll see you here
I'll see you here

Apparent, apparent
Heir apparent
You say that you want it, I'm sure that you'll get it
They'll seduce your heart and then they'll slap your arse

Heir, heir, heir
Heir, heir, heir
Heir, heir, heir
Heir, heir, heir

Suprised this song doesn't have any comments. I'm actually not very clear on the meaning. Some of it seems quite self-explanatory, but other bits don't. Who is the heir? Heir of what? A shyness that is criminally vulgar? I suppose essentially it's about someone, the heir, who is quite naive and is just beginning to realize what a terrible place the world is.

I love this song; one of Morrissey's best B-sides. The lyrics are so funny.

A great song that was sadly buried as a Maladjuted b-side and on the Lost EP. This song could be considered a companion to David Bowie's Teenage Wildlife. The song is an allegory for Morrissey career at that time and those who were looking to succeed him. At the time this song was written circa 1996/7, Morrissey's career was in need of serious rehab, SG had not sold well and neither would Maladjusted. So his references to degradation (maybe poor concert ticket sales) and 'it had all changed' (musical tastes). The heir is an upcoming pop star seeking to take Morrissey's former place in pop royalty. The song is a cautionary message to budding pop stars- hey kids, some of you might make it, but beware, the industry will use you, you fan base could dissappear and you'll wind up washed up like me. Fortunately for Morrissey, he was able to make a comeback after Maladjusted so he didn't truly wash up.
