No Sleep Lyrics

No sleep
I haven't slept for a week
And I'm cold
Yeah I'm so cold
She's right
I should do something of my life
But I'm old, I'm old I'm getting old
Those eyes
She said they don't recognize me
Those lips
They're never calling my name
(chorus)
It feels so heavy
Feels so heavy, heavy
I'm waiting for a Saturday
Waiting for a Saturday
And I'm too young to be old
Une fille
Jolie
Passée tout près de moi
Elle arrête le temps
Au coin de Sainte-Catherine et Saint-Laurent
Do do do do do do do do do
Do do do do do
(chorus)
Elle m'a regardé
Et elle souriait
Elle m'a fait penser à rien en ce moment
Et comme le vent, elle s'en allait
Et moi j'suis réveillé
Ouais moi j'suis réveillé
(chorus)

For anyone wondering, here's a translation of the French lyrics.

A pretty girl Walks close to me She stops time On the corner of St. Catherine and St. Laurent

She looks at me And she smiles She makes my mind blank But like the wind she goes And I wake up Yes I wake up

St. Catherine and St. Laurent are intersecting streets, in Montreal. This intersection is particularly infamous for it's prostitutes. I belive that this song is about a man who just couldn't pick a girl and settle down.

Second stanza is about the hooker (that he's been to, or that's an ex of his): she doesn't recognize me, and she just calls out for people the more i think about this, the harder time i have figuring out what it really means... the hooker being an ex could be a sort of foreshadowing on how bleak his future will be if he continues like this

Saturday is THE party night by excellence

Minor translation corrections: (as part of it is actually sung in the past perfect) A pretty girl Passed me ever so close She stopped time At the corner of St. Catherine and St. Laurent

She looked at me and she smiled She made me think of nothing at that moment But like the wind, she left And I'm awake Yea I'm awake

The song with the most beautiful melody on We Were Born In A Flame. Not too many people posting on Sam Roberts. I'm from Canada, and he's quite popular here... a very mainstream artist. To my understanding he's not very popular in American yet though. Well, he's definitely not ashamed of his Canadian roots in his music... I think he represents Canada very well, especially rural and small town Canada. Anyway, it's a great album and he's great in concert.

I love how he added French into the song, he definitely represents Montreal well (yes! those are actual streets in my city!) :) It kind of contributes to his image, or what he represents, the fact that not many people know him in the States. I'm proud to be from his same hometown.. :D Seen him live twice, and i gotta say - he can't rock harder than he does already. Sam Roberts band is awesome.

I thought the last two lines were "and I wake up Yes, I wake up" But I could be wrong.

A hangdog, fizzled out but cooled down song--I get something like the blues from the English stanzas. As for the French, I can see it being about an overly-romanticized encounter, one with a woman of the night--except it was all a dream. 'Et moi, je me reveillais.' Walter Mitty comes to mind.

Bravo, Mr. Roberts, for making such a spectacular bilingual song!

My Interpretation

How 'romantic' can an encounter be when it's with a prostitute? She must have excelled in her high school drama group....

Really great song, but a few corrections:

Une fille jolie, passait tout près de moi, elle arrêtait le temps, Au coin de Sainte-Catherine et Saint-Laurent (Chorus) Elle me regardait, elle souriait, elle m'a fait penser à rien en ce moment, Et comme le vent, elle s'en allait, et moi je suis réveillé, ouais moi je suis réveillé
