Time Lyrics

Time here all but means nothing, just shadows that move cross the wall.
They keep me company but they dont ask of me, they dont say nothing at all.

I need just a little more silence, I need just a little more time.

You send your thieves to me, silently stalking me, dragging me into your war.
Would you give me no choice in this?
I know you cant resist trying to re-open a sore.

So leave me be, I dont want to argue. I just get confused and I come all undone.
If I agree well it's just to appease you, 'cause I dont remember what we're fighting for.

You see love a tight thorny thread that you spin in a circle of gold.
To have me to hold me, a token for all to see, captured to be your's alone.

I need just a little more silence, yeah I need just a little more time.

For courage to pull away, there will be hell to pay, deeper you cut to the bone.

Chorus

Time here all but means nothing, just shadows that move cross the walls.
They keep me company but they dont ask of me, they dont say nothing at all

Chorus

"You see love a tight thorny thread that you spin in a circle of gold. To have me to hold me, a token for all to see, captured to be your's alone." -Going through repeated fights , verbal abuse. Having some one hold your ring up to you throwing it in your face and using it against you..... marriage trouble!!!!! I think it means she wants out....

in this song, when i hear her say "just shadows that move 'cross the wall", i always think of Plato's Allegory Of The Cave. can anyone verify?

i bet this one is personal to her - given that it was written in 2003 i am also in agreement with tiannaos and betting this is about her relationship with her (ex) husband. I think the song (much like the rest of the album) is significantly more just passive acceptance of something that is simply not working. She is looking for the courage to leave even though it will be incredibly difficult.

I'll admit, this song really hits deeply. I can relate - as most all of us can. My version of interpretation is simply this:

"Time here all but mean nothing, just shadows that move cross the wall. They keep me company but they don't ask of me, they don't say nothing at all."

  • This could symbolize the need for solitude as shadows don't press any issues.

"I need just a little more silence, I need just a little more time."

  • The first part could signify that perhaps, though she's alone, he/she is still there; presence alone can disturb the silence that is already there. The second - obviously a choice or decision is needed to be made.

"You send your thieves to me, silently stalking me, dragging me into your war."

  • "Thieves" could possibly mean arguements or subtle hints of the current decision/choice (war).

"Would you give me no choice in this?"

  • Obvious the decision/choice she needs to make seems a little one side from the other party.

"I know you can't resist trying to re-open a sore"

  • Bringing up something or issue from the past.

"So leave me be, I don't want to argue. I just get confused and I come all undone. If I agree well it's just to appease you, 'cause I don't remember what we're fighting for."

  • Obviously she doesn't want to argue about the issue; she's confused with what decision to make.

"You see love a tight thorny thread that you spin in a circle of gold. To have me to hold me, a token for all to see, captured to by your's alone."

  • She's married and he's displaying her. Tight and thorny signifying that she's not comfortable with the "fit" of marriage.

"For courage to pull away, there will be hell to pay, deeper you cut to the bone."

  • Signifying she wants to leave, but knowing the consequences.

So, overall, it is about her deciding on whether or not to stay or to leave.

Time has to be one of my favourites on the Afterglow album. (So I was seriously disappointed when she didn't include it in the concert I attended!)

Perhaps it's not a complex song like many of her others, but it doesn't need to be... it's basically a cry for solitude and the peace of it, when someone's been hounding you and forcing you to fight with them over nothing, seemingly for the sake of conflict alone. I sometimes feel like this.

I've spent so many dark nights playing this song.. it has a chilling sound to it at the starting, and it just comforts me to have it on in a down time.

"I need just a little more silence, I need just a little more time."

  • I need more time to get over things..

"For courage to pull away, there will be hell to pay, deeper you cut to the bone."

  • It's true for someone who wants something bad

A song that show being alone doesn't mean you're lonely it can be a relief from the conflict outside. When inside, away by yourself, even time lets you be, if only for a while.

this may sound sick or strange, but i want them to play this song at my funeral. it's really comforting in a sad sort of way. it's kind of like my song, in a way: it's the one i relate to more than any of the others, and it's easily one of my favorite of her songs (this and possession)

This song reminds me of the character Hai from the Kiesha'ra series by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. It seems to match her story perfectly... I love this song.

when i hear this song it reminds me of my past relationship with an abusive ex. i wanted out but couldnt leave because i was caught up and conflicted. i felt i had no choise but to stay. he was in my head all the time and i just wanted silence.

"Time here all but means nothing, just shadows that move cross the wall.

They keep me company but they dont ask of me, they dont say nothing at all.

I need just a little more silence, I need just a little more time."

thats how i felt all the time when it got really bad. but like any good artist you can take the meaning of the words and find comfort on how you perceive them :]
