So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
No deals, no bling
No Benz, or high-beams
Might sound funny,
What would the world be like without money?
Mo’ friends, less schemes, no lawyers, mo’ clean
Might sound funny
What would the world be like without money?
No rich no poor no more,
everything’s free in yo favorite store
Get your clothes, get your food
Get some drinks if you the mood.
Come to the concert, pay no fees
Get your shirts, free CD’s
Stickers, posters, what you need?
A little bit of herb, but stay low key.
No stress no war ya see,
No punks on MTV.
No hate, no jealosy,
No more reasons for robbery.
In your mansion, in your hut
On the street, or in the cut
No more flossin’, lose the strut.
Raise it up, are you real or what?
No deals, no bling
No Benz, or high-beams
Might sound funny,
What would the world be like without money?
Mo’ friends, less schemes, no lawyers, mo’ clean
Might sound funny
What would the world be like without money?
No more taxes, no more jail.
No more classes, all excel.
You get yours and I’ll get mine,
In the end, we all gon’ shine.
Take your time, it’s all right.
Party all day, party all night.
Come to the crib and grab a bite,
We all got enough don’t need to fight.
Cuz it’s a world with no money,
Pass the chicken, pass the peas.
Mashed potatoes, collared greens,
All you gotta do is just say please.
Don’t worry ‘bout the bill,
Come in and get your fill.
Come on, sit back and chill.
Give it all away, don’t need a will.
No deals, no bling
No Benz, or high-beams
Might sound funny,
What would the world be like without money?
Mo’ friends, less schemes, no lawyers, mo’ clean
Might sound funny
What would the world be like without money?
No crooked politicians bitchin’,
No more roaches in yo’ kitchen.
No more hunger, no tuition
Every summer with air condition.
No more prison, take the key.
No more livin’ in poverty.
No more system, set you free.
Go to the mall on a shoppin’ spree.
Get your whips, take your trips,
Go see the world and cruise the strips
Lose the clips, no more guns.
No more fightin’ over petty sums.
No eviction, no more fines
No more slums, no more crimes
No more tickets, no more rent
No hard times cuz your money’s spent
No deals, no bling
No Benz, or high-beams
Might sound funny,
What would the world be like without money?
Mo’ friends, less schemes, no lawyers, mo’ clean
Might sound funny
What would the world be like without money?
No Benz, or high-beams
