Easy Way to Cry

Probably my favorite song. I can't figure out, though, whether it's about parting occuring now ("and as I watch you leave" and "watching you go") or in the future ("and come that day").

I love this song... its the way you always feel after a break up... you feel so right yet everything that happens in ur relationship is wrong.

i would say it is about a sexuall relationship, and he`s got feelings for her. but its only sex to her. she may have promised him more in the future, but he doesnt believe her, and just sticks with it because of his strong feelings for her..

the reference to smoking a cigarette on the aftermath of a shoddy relationship is just beyond witty.

For me this song is about a guy who is in a sexual relationship with a woman who wants nothing more than that with him. He is frustrated that she can't see that they could be good together - "How right it all could be". The first verse is him waking in the morning beside his lover, and reluctantly having to leave because she doesn't want him to stay. The smoke reference is either a smoking cigarette or a metaphor for the cloudiness and uncertainty he is experiencing. The second verse shows the signals he is picking up from her and interpreting them as 'she wants to remain romantically distant'. "And as I watch you leave I stand Inside my house of straw" - This part of the song underlines his feelings of vulnerability and lack of control in the 'relationship'. He can't stand for them to part, and when they do, he feels very weak with low defences (the "house of straw" refers to the weakest and most vulnerable house built by the Three Little Pigs which was then blown away by the wolf). The things "recollecting" in his mind are the memories they have together that reinforces his belief that they should be together. The pain of the song is that she can't see what they could have together and he is afraid he will lose her. The only thing he can do is be there for her until the day comes where either she: a. Realises that she wants to be with him romantically and not just sexually OR b. Finds someone else who she wants to be with, in which case he will be discarded like a cigarette butt.

This is the penultimate track on 'A New Day At Midnight' his sixth studio album and follow up to 'White Ladder' and an album with his father's death permeating throughout. The track 'December' is a case in point. The song clearly reflects a relationship (perhaps a one night stand) which ultimately feels very empty. The reference in the chorus to, "my house of straw" reinforces his own vulnerability and regret that this relationship was not working out - perhaps unrequited love. The song is a ballad, written and sung with deep emotion by a thoughtful writer often not credited with such skill. The song's actual title and how the phrase is used within the song however reflect two different expressions of emotion do they not?
