Equus Lyrics

Allow me to show you
The way which I adore you

Sometimes I think I must
Just let you be a horse
All I want is to be a rider
To be part of you

Afraid so afraid
To loose you
If someone looks at you
Turn into donkey
Pretend you are lame

Equus by nature
Timid creature
Ready to run away
Equus by nature
Timid creature
Cares nothing
For the plans they made

I will hide you
Will protect you
Won’t let anyone
Take you away

This song is written through the eyes of Alan Strang from Peter Shaffer's play, "Equus". In the play, a schizophrenic Alan Strang follows a horse god named Equus.

also, a few years before the release of "Misery...", Kazu suffered a broken leg after falling/being thrown off a horse. The album revisits the theme of being injured by an innocent creature and this, I feel, is the pinnacle of this concept.

also the name "equus" is simply the latin name for horse, not necessarily a reference to the play; although interesting

i always thought it alternated between: "allow me to show you the way which i, i know you" and "allow me to show you the way which i adore you"...

still, one of my favorite B-R

In the booklet it only says "Allow me to show you the way which I adore you"

Personally I think that this is about Kazu's (singer) recovery. The first song of the album symbolises her accident and this one finalises the recovery as she dares to go back to riding again.

There is a lot of "horse" symbolism in Blonde Redhead's lyrics. Horses are mentioned in "the dress" as well.

The recurring equine theme in Blonde Redhead is most likely due to the fact that their singer Kazu had to recover from an accident where she fell off her horse and got trampled, breaking her jaw and resulting in a very long recovery.
