Falling From Grace Lyrics
You make me satisfied
You only want to ride
But that's alright by me
We happen to be free
For what tomorrow brings
No peace and broken wings
It may have been so good
But now it's understood
'Twas just a night
If I could tear my heart
And keep it miles apart
From love of beast or man
And never give a damn
If I could learn to lie
And never show my pride
I'd be just like the rest
Be someone I detest
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun to shine
Love...
Destroys the best of us
Then leaves the rest of us
Thinking perhaps we'll die
Yet still we stay alive
Lost in a hollow frame
With lonely tears remain
Not knowing our life's worth
Dragging around the earth
How false the light
You make me satisfied
You only want to ride
But that's alright by me
We happen to be free
And if we fall from grace
At least we had a taste
Of something more than this
Unresolved black abyss
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm only looking for the sun to shine
You only want to ride
But that's alright by me
We happen to be free
For what tomorrow brings
No peace and broken wings
It may have been so good
But now it's understood
'Twas just a night
And keep it miles apart
From love of beast or man
And never give a damn
If I could learn to lie
And never show my pride
I'd be just like the rest
Be someone I detest
I'm always looking for the sun to shine
Destroys the best of us
Then leaves the rest of us
Thinking perhaps we'll die
Yet still we stay alive
Lost in a hollow frame
With lonely tears remain
Not knowing our life's worth
Dragging around the earth
How false the light
You only want to ride
But that's alright by me
We happen to be free
And if we fall from grace
At least we had a taste
Of something more than this
Unresolved black abyss
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm only looking for the sun to shine

Me too. Listening to this takes me back in time... ironically, to when I wasn't even born. Isobel Campbell's stylings and the instrumental arrangement hark back to the days of 60s 'easy listening/lounge' chanteuses. And yet the mystically melancholy element in Campbell's voice just adds that bit of gravitas which is necessary for a great song (otherwise, its' just bubblegum crap).
As for the lyrics, it's fairly straightforward to me. On a more general level it's about the hardships, heartbreaks, and uncertainties of love. This song is wonderful because we can all relate to that.
But if you get down to the details, you realize that it's about getting used - probably for cheap emotional or sexual gratification by another person. Maybe he or she saw you as a fling or someone to lean on in a lonely moment, while you were genuinely in love. That always hurts a bit.
"You make me satisfied You only want to ride But that's alright by me We happen to be free For what tomorrow brings No peace and broken wings It may have been so good But now it's understood 'Twas just a night"
The second verse then expands onto the eternal predicament which is Love and human emotions...
"Love... Destroys the best of us Then leaves the rest of us Thinking perhaps we'll die Yet still we stay alive Lost in a hollow frame With lonely tears remain Not knowing our life's worth Dragging around the earth How false the light"
But the beauty of this song is that it leaves the listener with hope. She's always 'looking for the sun'... hopefully alludes to the fact that there's a future for every one of us - even us victims of love and angels that have had our wings bruised. Smile, for there's sunshine to draw from. Look up, soak in the warmth, and with time and courage, get up...
"I'm always looking for the sun I'm always looking for the sun I'm always looking for the sun I'm only looking for the sun to shine"

go here. I love the video. left a kinda cheesy comment under the name 'undoer'. ^_^;
i just love her voice. perfect to listen to when you are exhausted or stressed as hell. perfect to make you feel all chipper.
i completely agree with you, Valmont. she was in love with someone that did not love her in the same way. "i'm always looking for the sun" - it seems like she's been looking for love for a long time "i'm only looking for the sun to shine" - because it's all she wants and she'll keep going on.
Um, I didn't really saw it that way. On the contrary, I felt like the girl herself indulged in an enjoyable but shallow relationship on purpose (but that's alright by me/ we happen to be free) because she is weary of love and the pain it brings (if I could tear my heart, etc). At the end, she seems to say that though that kind of relationship and mindset is usually considered bad (if we fall from grace...), she doesn't regret it (at least we had a taste/of something more than this, etc), and that she had fun and will keep looking for hope. Well, that just the way I though of it...
