Never Gonna Be The Same Lyrics

Cut me up today
I should've stood in your way
He lied
And everywhere a dream
Nothing came between
I died
Cut me all away
I will not be for you
God comes down

Never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same

And if you wanted water
And if you wanted food
And if you wanted shelter
I can not come over to you
And if you wanted love now
Or a needle and a spoon

You gotta show a little faith in me
Now baby I can't come over to you
It's never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same
God... come down

And if you want my heart out
Sittin' by the bay
Well the sun went down tomorrow
It will not come up today
And if you wanted love now
And wrapped your arms so cruel
If there's a God,it's me now baby
I cannot come over to you

It's never gonna be the same
She stood there in the way
She lied

You gotta show a little faith
In this old rugged cross you made
What goes up must go down, and down and down and down
I cried

And if I wanted fame now
Or the glory of the womb
And if I want my name in places
I'd never lie to you
And if I wanted Christ
Or a messiah by my side
I can't believe in anything
I know that Mary lied

Sucked you up today
Could've got in your way
Oh, Mary lied

Do you know…?
Can you feel it…?
Do you feel me… ?
Yeah !!!!

And if you wanted madness
If you want what's pure
Well you gotta come over to me
Baby my life doesn't reach to you
And if you want a love so
Unconditional and real
You gotta ride that black horse baby

Through the depths of hell where I've been
Follow me away yeah
All along…
I will be the same
The Strongest one that's made

Through the valley of life
It's not gonna be the same
Goodnight goodnight goodnight
Oh we'll never be the same

This is my absolute favorite song on the album. It's about giving up in a sense that she has no power... "And if you wanted water, and if you wanted food, and if you wanted shelter, I cannot come over to you, and if you want love now, or a needle and a spoon, you gotta show a little faith in me now baby, I cannot come over to you" and all the other parts where she discusses not being about to reach to the other side.

I think it's about Kurt and how she misses him. She sings that "I can not come over to you" like she would like to see him again but she can't. And "the needle and the spoon" is about the drug addiction.

it's her goodbye song to him. she acknowledges how things will never be the same because of his death. a lot of people miss that fact that a good bulk of her songs after his death are about him (ever before his death...Doll Parts started out as part of a letter she faxed him) and his death has dominated a large part of her emotional life. I can not come over to you can be in reference of two things...how she could not come to him right before he died, because she was in rehab, and how she cannot die and join him in the afterlife because she has responsibilities in life and other loved ones (Frances) and so he will have to wait for her. If you want food water shelter are all references to how she took care of him...should have stood in your way is a reference to how she feels guilty for not doing enough to stop his suicide (she chose to keep his suicidal tendencies secret...not even telling his Rehab Exodus...if they had been notified, they would have put him on suicide watch...then he wouldn't have been able to leave and kill himself...not that i blame her for his death, if someone really wants to die they will find a way) if you want the needle and the spoon is a reference to his drug habit...heroin. And most poignant and sad in the whole song is the end where she is softly singing goodnight and goodbye at the end. perhaps this is her way of finally laying him to rest in her mind and saying goodbye to him

I tend to see it as her farewell song to him too. I think the lines :

"and if I wanted fame now Or the glory of the womb And if I want my name emblazed on every light a new And if I wanted Christ Or a messiah by my side I can't believe in anything I know that Mary lied"

are amongst the most poignant she s ever written. There's a broken desperation about it, it's monumental.

I think this song is about being betrayed by someone or something you KNEW was true.

You are never the same after that.

"I can't believe in anything I know that Mary lied" is the reluctance to trust anything afterwards.

The you gotta come over to me part is about how she will not put herself out there for people who will stab her in the back. They have to come to her if they want something from her (friendship).

i drew a halo around stevie nicks head. adam and eve. the tunnel--yes! i'm going all the way through it baby blue! "take your silver spoon and dig your grave" --all in reverse. this is a song about the birth of a new attitude, and the death of a way of life.

This song is so mystical and beautiful,i like it.When she sings "you gotta ride that black horse baby through the depths of hell that ive been" it makes me think of how courtney is saying about all the crap thats happened through her life and to truely understand you would have had to go through what she had and relate to it.It also makes me think that she has got out of "hell" and is back again.

See I agree about it being the birth of her new life. But half the time the lyrics really reflect Kurt. Although I am heavily doubting it is about him.

from Courtney:

"its a gospel song

maybe God lives on the wrong side of town and isn’t allowed in your fancy houses or Jungians style its the narcissist mother incestuously fascinated by her pure son and When he falls for Joan Crawford on the wrong side of town she enters her body and demand he have faith bad kiss the frog

I do know its in san Francisco. and its about how when no one else believed in something is the best time to do so

of course sloppily she flips and expresses her desires- she doesn’t aint a messiah by her side. she cant believe that everyone doesn’t know that Mary did not get impregnated by an angel- she had a cock inside of her

also you don’t have to do anything in this song my protagonist will d o all the work but you have to believe in her and when its the worst shell come and make to stop"
