Under Your Breath Lyrics
Hangin' in the underground
Before a train back out of town
Away from you
All the lights that disappear
In the tunnels way down here
It's quite a view
Sometimes I wish I were deaf
Then I wouldn't hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
Locked away in your room
On the phone with someone who
She thinks out loud
Thought she found the right to leave
Think of the things you used to need
And I'd run out
Sometimes I wish I were deaf
But I hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
Anything that you put on me
All the things your head needs, You believe
Read my mind 'Cause I can't say anything
The sick heart potion
Two parts pain
One part true again
Sometimes I wish I were deaf
But I hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
Before a train back out of town
Away from you
All the lights that disappear
In the tunnels way down here
It's quite a view
Then I wouldn't hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
On the phone with someone who
She thinks out loud
Thought she found the right to leave
Think of the things you used to need
And I'd run out
But I hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath
All the things your head needs, You believe
Read my mind 'Cause I can't say anything
The sick heart potion
Two parts pain
One part true again
But I hear the words you say
Under your breath
Under your breath

Like most Whiskeytown songs, its about a doomed relationship. The singer knows its going to end and things have gotton strange with their lover. Really, its saying that sometimes its easier to hear nothing at all than face reality.
Brilliant song, from a brilliant album, by a brilliant songwriter. The song is made more tragic by the lyric "Sometimes I wish I were deaf", when you consider the man who wrote it is indeed now suffering such a problem.
The lyrics are incorrect on this and every other site. In the first verse it’s “for” a train not “before” one. In the second verse it’s “just” thinks out loud not “she”.
we've all felt this song before. i sure as hell have. and freewheelin said it right, sometimes it is just easier to hear nothing than to face reality. sometimes you just don't want to cause hurt, even though you already are whether you admit it to yourself or not.
