Empty Words Lyrics

Ashes and promises share a bond.
Through the winds of change,
Words are blown away.
When visions that should be
Are tattooed in your mind,
The power to let go
Is sometimes hard to find.

The answer cannot be found
In the writing of others,
Or the words of a trained mind.
In a precious world of memories
We find ourselves confined.

Claws so razor sharp,
Ripping at the spirit.

Promises, a potential to hurt.
Is anything real
When forever is to be until?
Deep inside, in the world of empty words...
No escaping from those haunting,
Empty words...

Do you ever feel it?
A craving that is so strong
To by thought rewind,
In order to find

Expectations that shined through the doubt
That soon would turn into the price
Of what a word will be worth.
When tomorrow comes
To be and we are left
Standing on our own-
And seeing what is real...

The answer cannot be found
In the writing of others,
Or the words of a trained mind.
In a precious world of memories,
We find ourselves confined.

Claws so razor sharp,
Ripping at the spirit...

[Repeat chorus]

I actually didn't think it was about a broken promise; to me it says that you cannot rely on the philosophy of others to see you through, you have to make your own path. No matter how educated someone is, their wisdom is just as empty and mortal as yours, and no better to guide you. "In a precious world of memories We find ourselves confined" meant that we are trapped in our state as an individual, and therefore what works for one of us will not work for all of us.

So to me it says "Think for yourself".

"A close person, probably the songwriter's lover made a promise to them (I think maybe an "I'll love you FOREVER" or something like that)." what is it with dumb bitches and always thinking the songs are about lovers or some relationship with a girl? fucking rediculous, theres other issues than just stupid boyfriend and girlfriend shit, grow the fuck up.

I agree with HarleyQuinn2112. This song is about thinking independently, but also about 'empty words', hollow promises. I think the bottom line of this song is think for yourself, you can never depend fully on others. Not on the aspect of philosophy or the meaning of life, but also on promises.

This song reminds me of The Great Gooseberry. Someone attempted to make a tasty, fruity jam out of some sugar and a giant Gooseberry. But the concentration of Gooseberry in the jam jar was too great and the jam was rather sour. The jar was abandoned in the Dead Sea where it was ingested by a whale called Jim and caused him some stomach problems. This in turn led to him becoming marooned on Brighton beach. Anyway the point is that the Gooseberry which took 37 years to grow was wasted and ended up as a pile of green mush on the bottom of a Whale's abdomen.

Dude, shut the fuck up already! Your so fucken weird! Get a fucken life already, your not even funny!

This song reminds me of The Great Gatsby. Someone made a promise, broke it, and he is still holding on waiting, and when he realizes it will never come it tears at his spirit.

The meaning of this song, I would not say is meant to be put into any literal context, but rather, like any other Death song, to let the listener empathize for the subject of the written material. What I mean by this, of course, is that although BBoner is correct with his/her vision of the song's meaning, Schuldiner never really wrote in a self-centered, or literal way, but rather in a way that could express his feelings towards the world around him. He never experienced (or spoke/wrote of any experiences) involving BBoner's contextual summary.

....Wallamanage...keep up the good work, you make me laugh pretty hard sometimes :p heheh

Hahahahah Wallamanage your imagination if fuckin' amazing!!

Anyways, I think that this song is about mistrust, deciet.. You see we always trust people, and think that they're worthy of that trust, but are they really? We usually have faith in people or even things and imagine that they are something, where in reality (their "Secret Face"), it is a whole other story!!

Personally, I think it's not love that breaks us, but it is trust!! If you don't trust the person you love, you wouldn't be as hurt as if you trust him/her..

Anyways, back to the song.. Love has nothing to do with this song.. Its just.. The reality of humans written into a song!! This is how most people around us are!! It could be a friend, or even your expectations towards something or someone.. Thats what I think, might be wrong, but.. What the hell.. Hehe

I think that this song represents people who want guidance in life and do not know where to go to find help with their problems. When in reality, They must learn themselves instead of taking other people's words for it.

This is by far my favorite song from Death. I love the meaning and how I could relate to it!

A close person, probably the songwriter's lover made a promise to them (I think maybe an "I'll love you FOREVER" or something like that). The songwriter put all his trust in her, then she completely changed and left him without warning, out of nowhere. The winds of change blew her, and her promise away. The songwriter is having trouble coping with that, and has lost all trust in her, and everyone else around him as well. He questions what is real, if anything lasts forever, and why this happened to him. He's stuck in the past, in a world of memories, and can't believe what has happened, can't let go. Nothing at all seems real, and words are worthless and empty to him. And the broken promise is tearing at his spirit.

Well, that's my life story right there, haha! Except instead of an "I'll love you forever," it was more like "I'll love you for a few more months and then go bang my ACTUAL boyfriend..." xD
