So Beautiful Lyrics
Found myself just the other day
In the backyard of a friends place
Thinking about you
Thinking of the crowd you're in,
What you're up to, where you've been,
Just thinking...
You know the clothes that you wear, and the colour in your hair,
Shouldn't change you,
Now you tell me why is it so,
You're bigger than Mighty Joe
At least you think so
God my fingers burn,
Now when I think of touching your hair
You have changed so much that I don't know,
If I can call you, and tell you I care
And I would love to bring you down,
Plant your feet back on the ground
Threw my smoke down on the ground
Turned my head and I heard the sound, that reminded me
Of the days so young and sweet,
Always so much fun to me
At least I thought so
Now you think you're so damn fine,
You could rule the world,
No not mine,
I don't think so
God my fingers burn,
Now when I think of touching your hair
You have changed so much, that I don't know,
If I can call you and tell you I care
You know the scene that you're in,
And the people that you've been with,
Just get to me
But you think I'm not as cool
As you are so beautiful,
Who you foolin?
Well I'm here to tell you babe,
The game you're in, is just a game
So damn pretentious
God my fingers burn,
Now when I think of touching your hair
You have changed so much that I don't know,
If I can call you, and tell you I care
And I would love to bring you down,
Plant your feet back on the ground
You think you're so beautiful....So beautiful
In the backyard of a friends place
Thinking about you
Thinking of the crowd you're in,

this song is about a guy who was in love with a girl for a long time, but now its over and now she hangs out with a totally different crowd and has changed a lot, so much so its like he doesnt know her anymore
actually, he has ambiguous feelings toward the girl. he remembers caring for who she was, but doesn't like who she has become.
Even though it seems this song has been interpreted by a lot of people from being sung from the point of view of an ex-boyfriend, I think of it as from the point of view of a close friend or brother, someone who has not seen this girl that the song is about for a while. While this guy and girl have been apart she has begun to hang out with different people and do different things, and she now thinks she is hot and cool and better than him, and better off without him. The guy seems to not be able to help thinking about her, but also seems to have feeling of resentment towards her. He wishes she could go back to the way she was so he could love her how he used to. The first couple of times I heard this song I couldn't get to the end without crying. I was going through a really bad patch of my life and I felt like the song was about me. I felt like all those who may have been able to once call me and tell me they care (as in the song lyrics) would now not be able to because I'd changed so much. I felt like my sister, my brother and my ex-boyfriend, and my best friend has once been the only ones who knew how I truly was, and now they've all gone away and I've changed and I don't think they'd know me anymore. That scares me, as it seems to scare the guy in the song.
@liv85 Omg haven’t heard this song in years then randomly heard it in my local Bunnings late just before they closed. It had quite a profound impact on me. Then looking up the lyrics I read your comment and hit me hard. Your comment was so long ago can’t believe no one has followed it up. If you’re account is still active would love to hear how you are now.

As Pete Murray has said (search for the song on youtube and click on the live performance in the Netherlands): It's about someone being utterly pretentious.
He says it's the most misunderstood song he's ever written.
Apparently a lot of people use it for their weddings, which he finds completey ridiculous because of the meaning of the song.
It's a love song, but it's about a group of people he ran into one night. The lyrics are exactly what you think they are about and there's no hidden meaning.
It's ridiculous that some people don't pay any attention to the lyrics. This is the least suitable love song for a wedding I can think of! It's about the realisation that some people just aren't who they pretend to be… they put on an act depending on who they are with, they let their own ego get the better of them. It's not really about being happily in love, despite the soft tone of the song. It's more bittersweet and telling than it is romantic and hopeful. Please, listen to the lyrics people!

ok well everyones interpretations seem to differ slightly. i believe stonedagedqueens is most correct. reasons: It seems more sexual that being a friend.. and he reminises about the good times with them.. so it cant be just a crush he crushes on from afar either.. My break down: (Found myself just the other day In the backyard of a friends place Thinking about you Thinking of the crowd you're in, What you're up to, where you've been, Just thinking...) self explainatory... just thinking about her for whatever reason... (You know the clothes that you wear, and the colour in your hair, Shouldn't change you, Now tell me why is it so, You're bigger than Mighty Joe
At least you think so) here he just says that the way u dress etc doesnt define the person u are, and just cause u change ur hair or your style, it shouldnt change you as a person.. and he is asking why she thinks she is better than everyone else now. (God my fingers burn, Now when I think of touching your hair) Here this seems a little more sexual, which suggests he used to have something with the girl in the past.. ppl dont generally touch someones hair unless u are really close..other wise its creepy.. but he is just saying that he doesnt like the feeling he gets when he thinks about her, as its not a good feeling
(You have changed so much that I don't know, If I can call you, and tell you I care) obvious... doesnt think that she cares enough to talk to him, so he feels he cant call and say hi i still care about you, and see what she is doing to herself and how she have changed.
(And I would love to bring you down, Plant your feet back on the ground) he wants to call her to bring her back to reality, and get her of her imaginary pedastal and back down on the ground where everyone else is..
(Threw my smoke down on the ground Turned my head and I heard the sound, that reminded me Of the days so young and sweet, Always so much fun to me At least I thought so) basically just saying that he heard something that reminded him of the good times that he had with her.. and that it was fun so he thought
(Now you think you're so damn fine, You could rule the world, No not mine, I don't think so) but now he feels that she thinks she is too good for him even as a friend. and she thinks she is on top of the world and he wont let her think she is better than him.
(You know the scene that you're in, And the people that you've been with, Just get to me But you think I'm not as cool As you are so beautiful, Who you foolin?) this part generaly says that crowd she is in and hanging out with are the cause and that its annoying him that they have changed her cause they (and her) think they are too cool for him and she if fooling herself.
(Well I'm here to tell you babe, The game you're in, is just a game So damn pretentious) just saying im here and im gonna tell u how it really is! she is playing a game that she doesnt realise it yet. pretentious means making an extravagant outward show..putting on a show..
thats how i see it..feel free to try and correct me breaking it down like that
'god, my finger burn, now when I think of touching your hair...' damn, I wish someone said something like that about me...not some stupid, average 'you're so pretty' or 'I love your boobs'...that sounds like someone who really cares...
@neuroticvinyl actually it is totally not what you think. his fingers burn at the thought of touching her hair in the context of this song is not too nice...it means that he does NOT want to touch her hair.

this is not a love song - this is a song about an ex GF who has changed so much and is so pretentious that he's actually glad he's not with her anymore.

There is no hidden meaning to this song at all. It means what it says. He falls for a younger beautiful girl and she broke his heart. He really cared for her, thought she was so innocent but she deceived him and has stained his memory. The meaning to the song must of really happened to the writer cause the lyrics are detailed to that effect. Awsome song, I relate to it and always triggers my past.
this song is.. So beautiful
i agree with stone, except not only does he not know her anymore, he doesn't like her anymore. song is beautiful and sad.
Whenever I hear this song it makes me think of a girl i was with once. the lyrics of this so captivate me and it seems as if the song was like a photograph of my time , some kind of still imagery of my experience. and just to add a big F#*K you to the girl who played me for a punk
