I actually really like this song, as atypical as it may be among her old songs. It's the female, the nurturing Jesus figure, more in touch with Earth and its people and all its nuances than any man Jesus could be.
You could be right. But I've read up on a lot of Tori's book and it seems to me this song is about Mary Magdanlene.

i like the reference to led zeppelin's "stairway to heaven" too... "I'm climbing up the stairs/I know there's heaven there..."
The gospel changes meaning.. is obviously referring to how fragile religion really is, and how there is little consistency within it.
This feminine Jesus figure embodies a sense of peace and escape for scarlet, and is very in tune with mother nature. Quite opposite to the hostile patriarch in 'Pankcake', Mrs. Jesus is almost seductive in his understanding of the world.
I love this song in its own right, and never realized the possible Beatles/Zeppelin references, but I love them! To add to the Beatles, their song 'Let It Be' does reference "mother Mary", making the connection even more suspicious.
Interesting reference with the Morning Star, i.e. Lucifer. Not sure what that means within the song. But I'm certain the song's about Mary Magdalene.
perhaps the reference to the Morning star is the actual coming of morning or a new day since the "morning star" heralds a new day.
I think the John or Paul reference, refers to biblical literature written by both. The Gospel of John and then the Pauline letters (my dad's a preacher too, and I had to go to Xian school). I think the basic gist of this line is that different parts of the bible ("Gospel") were written by different men who had different agendas. There is, in the Nag Hammadi (lost biblical books) a book entitled "The Gospel of Mary Magdalene", and I think the other comments are correct that this book is about Mary Magdalene (there are those who believe that she and Jesus were married, hence "Mrs. Jesus"). In this book, Mary Magdalene is considered the most beloved by Jesus.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, and it is a reference to the Beatles.
