I think that this song is about a guy that doesnt have much a social life, thus him "Waiting in the Shadows". He is looking for his break to leave the shadows, he feels alone, he feels like he needs a girlfriend or someone to talk too, and he has been waiting in his own shadows of darkness, and thats what is keeping him from socializing with other people. He probally stays home most of the time and feels lonely. He wants to step out of the shadow and start a new type of life because he is tired of staying in the shadows and watching and waiting, cause it aint going to happen.
When the rasmus released this song in the UK and Lauri was quizzed over it, he made the comment that it was written on tour when he was depressed and if you read it in that light you can see it.
The sequel (night after night) was written on the next tour when he was actually less depressed.

everyone I know just discovered it and now claim it as "their song" pisses me off. Ive known it for three years now. ergh.
As far as i can relate to these words, it's yet another example of the secret self-destructive pain suffered by a codependent personality who doesn't realise their needs are just as valuable as other people!
Actually... the US version of the music video has absolutely nothing to do with this song. The European version of the music video - which my friend saw in the UK and told me about - is full of raven feathers and other gothic stuff... coupled with the lyrics makes this song sound to me like it's about being underappreciated and waiting for things to get better.
@yrogerg Ive only seen the version where its a young maid in the 1800s (Uk version ? looks english) goes and works for a rich family and they beat her and disregard her for everything she does .. and she looks in a mirror and sees the lead singer seeing her and he tries to becon her into the mirror (she eventually does after a particulary bad beating) and you can see hes Pulled a lot of diff ppl into his world ... maybe ones hes saved from bad situations ?

I LOVE THOSE LINES! I think it is pretty obvious that it isn't an actual cancer(medical tumour cancer) I'm not exactly sure what the lyrics mean, but I love them, lol
@Moo! I gathered that the "cancer" was prob meaning something like depression or anxiety and wanting to break from it and beat it :)
