This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

wow you guys are pathetic...oh quiffporn, um even though I actually like the band, I grew out of it because I was going through my 'teenage' phase but even though you think they suck, um I don't know. I look back and sometimes I just don't get what they are even saying but yet I like it, I just do. But the way you argued quiffporn until now :) but realize that ever since quiffporn (hi there, you really started a war down here smiles) stated that he/she hates this band, everyone started insulting he/she and stated why they don't suck. Simple thing: Get over it, whatever you think is good music, it's good music so don't listen to other people's 'I hate this band and they suck' opinions, because you are only satisfying them, unless they argue enough to get you to hate the song.
