Well Whiskey Lyrics
I get my whiskey from a well, except on holidays,
Then it's the top shelf.
But tonight I don't mind if I spend a little more
Cause you're a tolerant woman and the world is at war.
I know you witnessed my decline.
You used to push back the darkness like a floodlight.
But tonight that's a secret, like the soul of a whore
That if you want to have fun you'll just have to ignore.
Now I let my troubles solve themselves.
I used to get involved, but I'm just no help.
But tonight let's pretend that we're just like we were.
Let me stay until the morning, I will sleep on the floor.
We can talk in circles, no dollar figures
Just what is owed or paid. We can make predictions
I know you see the future and I agree
We agree, tonight's not happening
When I got dry as a desert, I got mean.
I was lonely and empty as a canteen.
With no anesthetic you're found to be sore.
But tonight I am drinking, all peaceful and warm
And just when I got fed up with the grey sky,
The sun came out of nowhere like a bar fight.
And it knocked out the wind and it bruised me with light
and I felt grateful for living like I feel tonight.
Well, I know you feel safer in a group
Where you could be anyone or they could be you.
But tonight, we'll take risks that you can afford.
You still have bars on your windows and a hole in your door.
We can talk in circles around the dirty mirrors
Night trickles down our throats.
And we can make a time line to last our whole lives.
But we don't know, no one knows
What's further up the road.
Just wait and see.
All in time.
Then it's the top shelf.
But tonight I don't mind if I spend a little more
Cause you're a tolerant woman and the world is at war.

dontthinktwice: Getting his "whiskey from a well" does not have anything to do with the location from where he gets it. "Well" whiskey (or any other type of liquor, well vodka, well gin, etc) is just whatever a bar has as their "house brand." For example, if you order a "well drink" it is made with the cheapest kind of alcohol, whatever the bar chooses to use (usually something crappy!), as opposed to top shelf, which is name brand. Just so ya know.
It's a lament of a relationship he used to have, where everything was great, and she helped him through tough times("You used to push back the darkness like a floodlight") But she left, and now he feels deserted and wants that relationship back, but all he has is his drinking to numb the pain(Saying he doesn't mind to spend more on whiskey these days, because he needs it more) He tries to ignore the problem, but realizes unless he confronts her about it he'll always be depressed and he just wants to be near her, and have her love, but not in a sexual way(he even says he'll sleep on the floor). yet according to her preditctions in the lyrics("You see the future and I agree. We've agreed, tonight's not happening.") that he can't have her back in his current state
Then he tries to stop drinking for either her sake, or for the sake of his own depression, but then realizes he can still drink and have a good time without her("With no anesthetic you're found to be sore. But tonight I'll be drinking all peaceful and warm")
So then he gets out of his rut and makes one more attempt to mend the bridges between him and the girl. Saying that nobody knows what the future holds - thus canceling out her earlier prediction that they can't get back together. It's a very hopeful song, and he changes from his depressed state initially into a cheerful one at the end.
Sorry that was long, but just for the fact there were no comments I felt obligated to do this song justice. And I'll hope you note the lyrics I mentioned are a little different than the ones posted above, but I copied mine straight out of the CD book. So the ones above may need amended.
i wish i had a well of whiskey. i really think that would make my life worth living.
"We can talk in circles around the dirty mirrors that trickles down our throats"
Seems like he liked to do blow with her
the correct lyrics in this part are: and just when I got fed up with that gray sky, the sun came out of nowhere like a bar fight. and it knocked out the wind and bruised me with light and I felt grateful for living like I feel tonight.
it's my favorite line
Yessiree> Our throat?
yeah, that's what coke does...
Sigh there are several obvious mistakes i noticed just by listening to the songand reading the above lyrics, some have been mentiond, but i cant be bothered to point them all out, theres to many 5-6 i guess. Its an ok song, not 1 of my favorites. I dont drink, partly cause im to young, thought that dosent stop my friends, and partly cause i've chosen not to. Anyway to country for me, and i cant relate to it because ive never been in a state where ive had to rely on alchohol So yeah, i suppose this is a worthless comment, hope you enjoyed it.
@bright-realities did you drink since then?
