The Place I Love Lyrics
The place I love is a million miles away
It’s too far for the eye to see
Still it’s me at least, and you can’t come there
No one is allowed at all
Only animals that love, will always, only, ever could be
And it’s always at the back of my mind
The place I love is overgrown now
With beautiful moss and colourful flowers
And goldfish that swim in a pool, there’s a small brick wall
With neon lighting controlled by lightning
I’m making a stand against the world
There’s those who would hurt us if they heard
The place I love is no where near here
Not within a mile of those trendy do’s
Where dogsbodies pick you up, and graciously give you a lift
With cherished thoughts and bitterness
I’m making a stand against the world
There’s those who would hurt us if they heard
And that’s always in the back of my mind
It’s too far for the eye to see
Still it’s me at least, and you can’t come there
No one is allowed at all
Only animals that love, will always, only, ever could be
And it’s always at the back of my mind
The place I love is overgrown now
With beautiful moss and colourful flowers
And goldfish that swim in a pool, there’s a small brick wall
I’m making a stand against the world
There’s those who would hurt us if they heard
Not within a mile of those trendy do’s
Where dogsbodies pick you up, and graciously give you a lift
I’m making a stand against the world
There’s those who would hurt us if they heard
And that’s always in the back of my mind

Weller mmntioned this in an interview (MoJO, May 08) when he was talking about his affection for the countryside. I think the most obvious clue to that is "The place I love is nowhere near here, not within a yard of those trendo do's" and the beautiful moss and clourful flowers.
The sound alone makes me imagine a sunny day in the sticks. Don';t know why, it just does.
But yeah, perhaps also about a safe place in the back of your mind where it seems no one can hurt you. I think in the third verse there's a bit of a nod to imaginary friends too, who 'pcik you up' in contrast to the rather cynical real world.
That 'safe place' could certainly be one's memories of the countryside anyway!
I think the safe place is a literal location, and the "in the back of my mind" is how he reflects on it, like SJ said.
great song...
Nearly every song they recorded from 'All Mod Cons' and the following two albums was a great song! This song reminds me of John Lennon's 'There's a Place.' A bullshit free retreat in the back of your mind.
I'll be off then!
