In the Crowd Lyrics
When I'm in the crowd, I don't see anything
My mind goes a blank, in the humid sunshine
When I'm in the crowd I don't see anything
I fall into a trance, at the supermarket
The noise flows me along, as I catch falling cans
Of baked beans on toast, technology is the most
And everyone seems just like me
They struggle hard to set themselves free
And their waiting for the change
When I'm in the crowd, I can't remember my name
And my only link is pots of Wall's ice cream
When I'm in the crowd - I don't see anything
Sometimes I think that it's a plot
An equilibrium melting pot
The government sponsors underhand
When I'm in the crowd
When I'm in the crowd
When I'm in the crowd
And everyone seems that they're acting a dream
Cause they're just not thinking about each other
And they're taking orders, which are media spawned
And they should know better, now you have been warned
And don't forget you saw it here first
When I'm in the crowd
When I'm in the crowd
When I'm in the crowd
And life just simply moves along
In simple houses, simple jobs
And no ones wanting for the change
When I'm in the crowd
When I'm in the crowd
When I'm in the crowd
My mind goes a blank, in the humid sunshine
When I'm in the crowd I don't see anything
I fall into a trance, at the supermarket

I've seen comments on here saying they can't believe how few people have accessed Paul Weller's lyrics - I agree with them. But I also think that it is amazing that people who HAVE acessed his lyrics, haven't made comments about this song.
This is such a gem that he continues to play it at his solo gigs.
Losing your identity and personality to the sheer weight of humanity around you.
Great psychedelic outro!
Its about losing yourself and your individuality in a culture and also...
This guy's life is a bit crap but all the problems (living conditions, etc.) go away when he is in a crowd of people with the same problems. Mod was all about clean living under dificult circumstances.
Attacking the social system that degrades life.
On one level, it makes me think of my background, where I grew up, my surroundings, the people around me,a nd how I always wanted a little bit more than a job behind a till doing what everyone else did, becoming nothing. I don't mean this in a snobbish kind of way, it's just me being dissatisfied with the monatarism I saw in a way.
Another thing is the verse "I fall into a trance at the supermarket..." is this people being lemmings, taken in by all the advertising and whatever the media/newspaper tell them without thinking for themselves. The amount of times I've noticed that in people..... it's quite scary really.
All in all, I think it's about losing your identity to the system.
One of my favourite songs.
Losing your identity and personality to the sheer weight of humanity around you.

this is the jams tour de force dark lyrics with an epic tune which just builds up similar to a day in the life by the beatles although the song has an originality all of its own
