Me and My Monkey Lyrics
There was me and my monkey
And with his dungarees and roller blades smoking filter tips
Reclining in the passenger seat of my super-charged jet black Chevrolet
He had the soft-top down
He liked the wind in his face
He said 'Son, you ever been to Vegas?' I said 'no'
He said 'that's where we're gonna go - you need a change of pace'
And we hit the strip with all the wedding chapels and the neon signs
He said 'I left my wallet in El Segondo' and proceeded to take two grand of mine
We made tracks to The Mandalay Bay Hotel
Asked the bell boy if he'd take me and my monkey as well
He looked in the passenger seat of my car and with a smile he said
'If your monkey's got that kind of money sir, then we've got a monkey bed!'
Me and my monkey
With a dream and a gun
I'm hoping my monkey don't point that gun at anyone
Me and my monkey
Like Butch and the Sundance Kid
Trying to understand why he did what he did
Why he did what he did
We got the elevator, I hit the 33rd floor
We had a room up top with the panoramic views like nothing you'd ever seen before
He went to sleep in the bidet
and when he awoke
He ran his little monkey fingers through yellow pages
Called up some escort services and ordered some okey doke
Forty minutes later there came a knock at the door
In walked this big bad ass baboon into my bedroom with three monkey whores
'Hi! My name is Sunshine - these are my girls
Lace my palm with silver baby and oh yeah, they'll rock your world'
So I watched pay-per-view and polished my shoes and my gun
Was diggin' old Kurt Cobain singing 'bout lithium
There came a knock at the door and in walked Sunshine
'What's up?' 'You'd better get your ass in here boy, your monkey's having too much of a good time!'
Me and my monkey
Drove in search of the sun
Me and my monkey
Don't point that gun at anyone
Me and my monkey
Like Billy The Kid
Trying to understand why he did what he did
Why he did what he did
Got tickets to see Sheena Easton
the monkey was high
Said it was a burning ambition to see her
before he died
We left before encores
he couldn't sit still
Sheena was a blast baby but my monkey was ill
We went to play black-jack
kept hitting twenty three
Couldn't help but notice this Mexican just staring at me
Or was it my monkey?
I couldn't be sure
It's not like you'd never seen a monkey in rollerblades and dungarees before
Now don't test my patience 'cause we're
not about to run
That's a bad ass monkey boy and he's packing a gun
'My name is Rodriguez' he says
with death in his eye
'I've been chasing you for a long time amigos, and now your monkey's gonna die!'
Me and my monkey
Drove in search of the sun
Me and my monkey
We don’t wanna kill no Mexican
But we got ten itchy fingers
One thing to declare
When the monkey is high
You do not stare
You do not stare
You do not stare
Looks like we got ourselves a Mexican stand off here boy
And I ain’t about to run
Put your gun down boy
How did I get mixed up with this fucking monkey anyhow
And with his dungarees and roller blades smoking filter tips
Reclining in the passenger seat of my super-charged jet black Chevrolet

I think this song might actually be about Robbie's problems with his own character and behaviour. It makes a lot of sense to think of the monkey as being a self-destructive, outrageous side to Robbie, that he was beginning to see as a separate personality and more trouble than it was worth.
The scene with the monkey having a "good time" while Robbie cleans his shoes and watches pay-per-view TV seems to show just how detached Robbie is becoming from his "monkey" and its behaviour, but at the same time he can't seem to do anything to stop it. "Trying to understand why he did what he did, Why he did what he did when he did," Robbie says, the voice of reason, while the "monkey" spends his (Robbie's) money and generally acts like a reckless clown. The last line would be a pretty fair estimation of Robbie's feelings, I would guess.
I like your guess, I agree. One thing about the part "why he did what he did" Its that he feels connected to Sundance kid who still bugs many film lovers why he let himself get killed. Robbie probably feels that maybe Sundance kid also had a destructive part that is out of control. Like we are looking to music to define our existence so is Robbie William doing true film and music, with references to lithium and Sundance kid.

@kirotourmaline To quote Robbie himself......"I had a conversation with a girl in a pool in Singapore. She said, 'How do you write a song?' I said,'You write about anything that comes to mind: give me two things and I will write a song for you this afternoon.' She said, 'Monkeys and rollerblades."

Nice theories by everyone else, but it's a lot simpler than that.

@kidego My I remind you of a line in "Come Undone"? "If I stop lying I'd just disappoint you" So... how much do you think is true in that story? And furthermore; the monkey with the rollerblades aren't the main motive in the song, just a metaphor and a quirky image.

His drug addiction is a monkey on his back. His weekend was a fork in the road as it took a defining nose dive into oblivion to finally result in a Mexican stand - off. A situation that could not continue had been building and finally Robbie realised he and his addiction were big trouble and so the monkey on his back had to be gotten rid of or it would take Robbie down if he did not stem the steep nose dive his life was in. Often with addicts including drinkers often a big bender will be what brings a hault to the repetitive behaviour the strong use this as the sign to stop digging the ig hole you are caught in and with support climb out and never look back. Then there are those who seem to be less able to escape. Perhaps Robbie having everything saw him realise he coukd easily lose it and end up another tragic rock star found dead way to young with so much to live for...much more than most. Often a strength is a weakness the means to do what ever you wish can be the means to fall harder with bucks to spend and high quality product it easily finances the temptations most of is can't afford. Many may even say it's a given drugs can inspire experience and uninhibited song writing ability thinking outside the square many great songs are written under wild imaginative, emotional trips of which also inspired many a song...feeding emotions making mistakes, lost love when one walks away from the life much earlier unable to be together due to the destructive nature of addiction.
Don't forget that these lyrics draw eerie similarities with the 2017 Vegas shooting.

this song ... obviously is about robbie when hes high or drunk ..... monkey = the state he is when he is on a high .... the lyrics are amazing and they tell a story of robbies past addictions
it's actually about someone dealing with bi polar
This song sounds like it's about a drug addiction. They are often reffered to as "monkeys." This song is kind of confusing with its refrences to mexicans and a room for his monkey. There are some metaphors in this song i dont really understand.
The Mandalay Bay Hotel as a place Robbie likes to visit for its casino.
This is a funny song. I think his monkey is refering to his libido.
The song is about a weekend Robbie spent in Vegas high on coke - the 2 grand the monkey spent was the amount Robbie spent on the drug. The Mexican was the dealer. He did actually order the hookers for himself
According to Daddy, giving a monkey a gun is like giving me a credit card........................................

We all know that drugs and alcohol is a wrong way to live. Also living life in the fast lane is not always a good thing. When you got this life it will always bring up the bad sides of you and that’s definitely not good. That’s the same as in the song “Me and My Monkey” by Robbie Williams.
The song is about Robbie Williams, a crazy monkey with roller blades and finally a dangerous Mexican with a gun. Robbie and the monkey are on a ride to Las Vegas to live life out and to get some real fun. They go to a hotel called “Mandalay Bay Hotel”. They order some coke and some hookers. Then it’s time for seeing the performance of Sheena Easton which is one of the monkey’s biggest wishes. They are affected by drugs. They decide to go to play some black-jack, and suddenly the Mexican shows up with a gun pointing at the monkey and Robbie. Robbie doesn’t really know how he ended up in this crazy situation.
It seems like the monkey is a good friend of Robbie, but I think it is a site of Robbie’s personality. It’s like he has split up his personality in directions. These directions can be bad or good. The monkey is one direction, the Mexican is another. When he is the monkey he is more risky than “the real Robbie”. The monkey dares to do things Robbie doesn’t. Taking drugs is one thing. You can see this in the end of the story when Robbie and the monkey get together with the Mexican. It’s not Robbie who is going to die, it’s the monkey. There must be a reason why the Mexican wants to kill the monkey. It is like a hazard game. Who is going to die?
The Mexican is a symbol of drugs. Mexico is where it is easy to get drugs. When Robbie was in the city El Segundo, which is a city near the Mexican border, he left his wallet. This is a symbol of that the monkey drove Robbie to go to Mexico to use all of his money on drugs. The Mexican is also one of the directions. It is a symbol of Robbie when he is affected by dangerous drugs. Drugs can kill and as we see in the song, the Mexican is really dangerous too.
Las Vegas is a symbol of living in the fast lane. The blend of gambling, money, hookers, drugs and all this is what Las Vegas is characterized of. If the story was happening in New York I would notice that Robbie just wanted to try something else, but the fact that it is all happening in Las Vegas gives us an idea of his life in the fast lane. The black-jack game in Las Vegas is a good place for a hazard game like in the song, because it’s like a “win or lose”-game. In the song it’s rather a “live or die”-game.
The stand-off between Robbie, the monkey and the Mexican in the end of the song signifies a triangle of immorality. The Mexican is pointing a gun at Robbie. The Monkey is also pointing at Robbie, and he is in a big, big trouble. He must get rid of one of those evil men. It is two against one and we get a really good point of how big troubles Robbie had.
The song shows how bad a life with drugs and alcohol is, and how this can show the darkest sites of a person. Robbie will always live with the inner wounds and everybody knows about it, but he discovered how to manage the need for drugs. I think that every person who is almost killed by drugs can get out of it, but only if they got the strength and self-control to do it.
