Silence is Easy

Well first off, I want to say that I love this song, and that I think it's very profound. (Or at least it is to me.)

I think this song expresses the point of view of a very shy person, possibly the author themself.

Everybody says that their looking for a shelter, Got a lot to give but I don't know how to help her, I should just let it go till they learn how to grow, And how to liberate.

These two verses pretty much say the same thing, that someone's looking for some kind of shelter, probably shelter in another person, maybe a lover of a friend. I think it's sung from the point of view of an onlooker - another person. They want to "help" this person from their silence/shyness - so to speak, but they don't know how to. Then they conclude that they should just let them be and let them grow into a more social and more outgoing person on their own accord - as if that is the ideal state of being. Maybe this person pities the object of description?

Now, I think this part is the shy person speaking. They say that being silent is easy, because they don't have to do anything; they don't have to risk anything by being silent. But then that silence "becomes" the person in the point of view of other people. They're always silent. They have nothing to say. They're quite boring. That silence becomes all the person is (from the point of view of other people). The shy person then says that those other people don't even know them, and that they [other people] just make up things about them instead.

Everybody says that I'm looking for a home now, Looking for a boy or I'm looking for a girl now, I can still let it go, I can still learn to grow, Into a child again.

This reiterates the first two stanzas. That they're looking for some form of shelter. The second line possibly alludes to looking for love in a man or a woman, or possibly the desire for children (settling down?). Maybe they think that finding love and settling down will change who they are? They then tell themselves that they can just let the shyness go and grow as a person, like they're trying to convince themselves.

Silence is easy, it just becomes me, You don't even know me, why lie about me. Silence is easy, it just becomes me, You don't even know me, why do you hate me.

This is the chorus again. I think the whole point of contention is centered here. Silence is easy for them, and that in being silent all the time, they become the silence in the eyes of other people. They say that those other people don't know them at all, and ask why they [other people] hate them, and/or lie about them.

I know that was long, but I wanted collect my thoughts on this song and put them out there. :) Brilliant song.
