Q&A
A Moment of Violence Lyrics
I never did lose a battle but I'm feeling further from the end of war
Deplored, ignored, and rarely ever self-assured
Why does it seem like the ones who have everything have nothing inside?
Nothing inside!
I don't sleep anymore, I gave it up
Because what we do is enough and now they're calling out our bluffs
Have you done a single thing for someone else?
Or do you take take take until your belly is stuffed?
How long do you think you can go before you lose it all?
Before they call you bluff and watch you fall?
I don't know but I'd like to think I had control
At some point but I let it go and lost my soul
Sit tight but the revolution's years away
I'm losing faith and I'm running low on things to say
So I guess I have no choice but to regurgitate
The tired anthem of a loser and a hypocrite
Oh! To have died that night I realized it wouldn't last!
Our days were numbered and the reaper tipped the hourglass
The final mayday of our sinking ship had come at last
Oh! To the west, you don't know what it is you're running from
And everybody's laughing loud
Your last chance to make your mother and father proud
Deplored, ignored, and rarely ever self-assured
Why does it seem like the ones who have everything have nothing inside?
Nothing inside!
Because what we do is enough and now they're calling out our bluffs
Have you done a single thing for someone else?
Or do you take take take until your belly is stuffed?

Still dont agree about the catch 22 thing, but these two songs are amazing. This song almost seems completly different from AMOS because it seems as though he is telling the faults of him and not the fault of who ever the song is about. It seems like it is telling both sides of the story in two different songs and in two different ways.
This probably isn't what it was really written about, but I feel like this entire song is about an average citizen living in Soviet Russia.
He feels "deplored, ignored, and self-assured" because they were expected to be part of society and nothing else as individuals. The "ones with everything have nothing inside" refers to the machine like government. This government claimed to be for the people, but really they just took what they wanted and exploited people as much as the czars they hated did.
The next 2 lines of rhetorical questions address the soviet government. "I'm losing faith and I'm running low on things to say / So I guess I have no choice but to regurgitate / The tired anthem of a loser and a hypocrite" is about how easy it was to be thrown in jail for participating in the "counter-revolution" in Russia if you didn't actively participate in soviet social activities.
Then the part about "the west" addresses how the western world really doesn't know anything about communism - at least here in America, most people here communism and think of it as it soviet russia is how communist theory is supposed to be, not realizing the evil of the USSR was the despotism, not the form of economy.
i cant believe nobody has written about this song...its awesome. Tom Kalnoky is a very talented songwriter and these two song (a moment of silence and this) really show that. their drummer is amazing too...just thought i'd add that in there
ERR!!! Tom
I love the fact that AMOS and AMOV are two different songs, instead of just one song, even though essentially they are the same song, only different. It reminds me of much of what Kalnoky does, remaking his own songs in different styles and with alternate lyrics (two versions of Here's to Life and Dear Sergio). Just Fantastic.
I heard Kalnoky talk personally about each of these two songs at a show in Camden awhile back. Violence is about the initial anger he felt towards Catch 22 directly after the drama started, while Silence is more of an over-time feeling about the situation.
Jimmifrisbee, there are actually 3 versions of Dear Sergio. (Catch 22, Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, and Streetlight) I love how Streetlight's version sounds a whole lot like B.O.T.A.R's version.
THere are technically 3 versions of Heres to life as well. Kalnoky used to perform it live with Catch 22 before he left. Though i never got to hear that version
There are also 2 versions of everything went numb bitches
