If And When We Rise Again Lyrics

don't you come to me with all your color-coded quotes
everybody's laughing but they never ever get my jokes
fool, you're a tool, a sheep
and it's obvious to everyone but company you keep
and don't you squint at me because your childhood was the pits
every single one of us have trodden through our shit
oh, and i know you're shrewd
because i smell it on your clothes
it's in everything you do

falling, fallen, we all fall down
it only really matters how we stand our ground
and if and when we rise to our feet again
we'll be on our own

everything we built
(it's gone)
and every one around
(is stunned)
we just sit here staring blankly
and everything goes numb
lord, if i felt a thing
i could wrap my mind around this
and prevent our getting singed
please excuse my enemies
i think they do not know
i will gladly self destruct if they leave me alone
friend, that's the end of us
because you're behind in empathy and overdue on trust

calmly, calmly and patiently
we've seen all the evidence
but still cannot believe
and if and when we rise to our feet again
we'll be on our own

somehow, someway, we perservere
the questions on our lips fall on deafened ears
and if and when we rise to our feet again
we'll be on our own

I see what you mean, but I love the intro the most. It sounds really dark.

I don't think this CD has a worst. Each song is great in a different way.

At first, this was probably the only song on the CD I couldn't find any real meaning behind. I first thought it was just some random song. But then I heard at the very beginning the quote of Kurt Cobain and then realized that the song seemed like it was about Kurt Cobain and how his music like his may have been "good", but it didn't accomplish anything. It's an uplifting song to say, "Yeah, all that bad stuff may be true, but that doesn't mean we give up and not try to live our lives and change things."

And it also refers to the fact that we all go through hard times and all that. Not one person alone should be immensely revered because they wrote songs about their's.

I think this song is absolutely great. Gotta love the instruments in the breakdown. I actually think the lyrics are really great, too. Probably the least repetitive in terms of lyrics on the album, I think, too. No line is spoken more than once, aside from "If and when we rise to our feet again / We'll be on our own," which of course only emphasizes this idea.

And I'm not quite up on my Kurt Cobain quotes anymore. Which comes from him?

Oh, I heard the quote at the beginning I think... the "moderate rock" before the instruments even come in. Cool stuff.

Something tells me that part of the song has to do with drugs, because of this line

"because i smell it on your clothes it's in everything you do"

I think it means that the narrator can smell shrewd on his clothes.

Doesn't have to be drugs, it could be something about doing something filthy (not literally but like betrayed someone as in "Oh you know he did it, I can smell it on him" or betrayal as in "I smell a rat" because it talks about the person or whatever as sneaky and selfish (the shrewd)

the instrumental break is actually Brahms - Hungarian Dance No. 5. i think this is one of their best songs on their CD
