M.E. Lyrics

And m.e. I eat dust
We’re all so run down
I’d call it my death
But I’ll only fade away
And I hate to fade alone
Now there’s only m.e.

We were so sure
We were so wrong
But there’s no one left to see
And there’s no one left to die
There’s only m.e.

Why shoud I care
Why should I try
Oh no, oh no
I turned off the pain
Like I turned off you all
Now there’s only m.e.

The song is about an artificial intelligence that killed every single sentient living thing on the planet. It succeeded, and now it has nothing to do. It is lonely.

Song Meaning

M.E. is about the last machine on earth. All human life has been destroyed, the planet has been completely desolated (nuclear war?) and the machines power source is dying.

hah! 'hot and cold' is my personal favorite basement jaxx jam, but anyway this gary numan song is great. as the first post stated it is about the last machine on earth. the creepiness of the synths in this song exemplify the strange isolation of technology. sweet. don't tase me bro.

Another song ‘M. E.’, which stood for Mechanical Engineering, its model type, was about the thoughts of the last machine left alive. Long after the world was dead and humans were a thing of the past, this machine still lingered. For hundreds of years it waited, unable to die, utterly alone, but fully aware. Numan, Gary. (R)evolution: The Autobiography (p. 68). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

Just incase people don't know, a certain Basement Jaxx sampled the hell out of this for their best song "Where's Your Head At?". And which is the best bit? The M.E. bassline, cause it's wicked!

Forget about machines or aliens, it's about extreme individualism and alienation of modern times where it seems you can only count on yourself, I guess this individualism was more from northern Europe, but it's also invading the south nowadays. Great tune and poetry from a genius in any case. The godfather of electro pop but so original and innovative.

@PeluCrespins So someone cites a specific quote from Gary Numan and you say "Forget about machines or aliens..." I can trust the actual author of the song, or some person on the internet with an opinion. I'll go with the actual author of the song, Gary Numan.

It also could be read as a suicidal song:

Why should I care Why should I try Oh no, oh no I turned off the pain Like I turned off you all

xdvr. Bingo Bango is Basement Jaxx's best song, not "where's your head at?" Songs pretty cool.

basement jaxx? I'll pretend I know who they are. I thought this was just another isolation-type song. Maybe some guy pushed everyone away to protect himself [kill them?] and make things better for him, and he's left with just himself. "no one left to die" "I turned off you all" "I turned off the pain" He realized that it isn't as satisfying as he thought, you need other people, then there's no reason for you. I guess he could be a machine. That would fit. great song.

@DJgif Yep, you're on the right path, but it's definitely about a machine/android. His 2nd thru 4th albums are his "Machine" trilogy.
