Complex Lyrics
They won’t come back
You know it’s always the same
And they’re sure to forget
Saying everyone lies
So I’m down to this
I’m down to walking on air
And you’re here by my side
With all your waving and smiles
Please keep them away
Don’t let them touch me
Please don’t let them lie
Don’t let them see me
You know it’s always the same
And they’re sure to forget
Saying everyone lies
I’m down to walking on air
And you’re here by my side
With all your waving and smiles
Don’t let them touch me
Please don’t let them lie
Don’t let them see me

great song !
This is one of my favorites by Numan. It summed how I felt when I was a lonely anti-social teenager with few friends. Seemed like people were always stabbing me in the back...I couldn't trust them. I really identified with his lyrics about alienation, mistrust, and communication breakdown. I discovered Numan's music because of the song Cars but once I heard the whole Pleasure Principle lp, it was like "hey! this guy is singing about the way I feel a lot of the time".
I feel the same mrlongrove. The feel of this song sounds like it could be in the soundtrack to my life at one point. This song reminds me how I just have one friend, I'd much rather have a guy friend but she's all I got. Like in this song she can be with me sometimes and keep them away, not let them touch me. The lines "And you’re here by my side, with all your waving and smiles" reminds me how she has all these aquaintances that she talks and bumps into constantly around school, while I just sit and wait.
An anti-social lifestyle, that's how Gary described most of his life, and 'Complex' captures that statement perfectly. The meaning of it is quite simple, you just have to listen closely, even to the instrumentals.
Brings back my 80' 81' years alone in a new High School My lunch hour alone on the seats at the football field It got better when I realized that the School I came from was the problem and not me No one at the new school even noticed me And one day, I had a new friend. I had a hard time trusting anyone at first but it worked out. Thank you Gary Numan for understanding and singing about something that is not "Pop Lyrics"
