Montségur Lyrics

I stand alone in this desolate space
In death they are truly alive
Massacred innocence, evil took place
The angels were burning inside

Centuries later I wonder why
What secret they took to their grave
Still burning heretics under our skies
Religion's still burning inside

[Chorus:]
At the gates and the walls of Montsegur
Blood on the stones of the citadel
At the gates and the walls of Montsegur
Blood on the stones of the citadel
At the gates and the walls of Montsegur
Blood on the stones of the citadel
At the gates and the walls of Montsegur
Blood on the stones of the citadel

As we kill them all so God will know his own
The innocents died for the Pope on his throne
Catholic greed and its paranoid zeal
Curse of the grail and the blood of the cross

Templar believers with blood on their hands
Joined in the chorus to kill on demand
Burned at the stake for their soul's liberty
To stand with the cathars, to die and be free

The book of Old Testament crippled and black
Satan - his weapon is lust
Leaving this evil damnation of flesh
Back to the torture of lies

The perfect ones willingly died at the stake
And all of their followers slain
As for the knowledge of God they had claimed
Religion's still burning inside

[Repeat chorus, 3rd verse]

Templar believers with blood on their hands
Joined in the chorus to kill on command
Burned at the stake for their soul's liberty
Still running herretics under our skies

As we kill them all so God know his own
Laugh at the darkness and in god we trust
The eye in the triangle smiling with sin
No passover feast for the cursed within

Facing the sun as they went to their grave
Burn like a dog or you live like a slave
Death is the price for your soul's liberty
To stand with the cathars and to die and be free

[Repeat chorus]

Yes, TheJoeInMe is correct. Actually Montsegur is one of the Cathar strongholds (all are located in the Pyrenees mountains in France near the border to Spain, I have visited most of them). Montsegur was considered like the capital of the Cathars. It was AFAIK not the last stronghold to fall, but is sadly famous for the pyre. It is said that shortly before the surrender of the cathars a couple of cathars escaped via the steep side of the hill to bring away and hide a treasure. Of course, as already mentioned, some believe that it was the Holy Grail. Here some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montségur. Anyway, the song is excellent!

It's not about the crusades, as someone said. It's about the attack and genocide that the Catholic Church carried out against another religious group. That group was also christian, but they had other ways of understanding the Bible, which is a thing that the Church wasn't able to understand, as always. So they began to attack this huge castle, destroy the walls of the citadel.

No doubt it's about the Crusades (reference to the Templars). Truly one of the more interesting champaigns in Age of Empires 2. It takes on a new meaning with Iron Maiden.

It's about the Catholic army that destroyed the Cathars, a sect that broke away from Catholicism. They fled to the top of a hill called Montségur, in France, where they were beseiged until they surrendered. They were all burned alive (about 250 men, women, and children) on a giant pyre. One of Maiden's heaviest numbers.

I like the way the lyrics are spoken in this song! as if each word has a time for itself, each word is separated form the next

This is the song that got me into heavy music. When I first heard, I was blown away by its bangin' intensity and strength.

Same goes for Paschendale.

TheJoeInMe is correct, they broke away from Catholocism but not because they were against god, but because they didnt agree with the methods of the catholic church. The myth goes that they may have even been carrying the Holy Grail along with them to protect it.
