The Abusing of the Rib Lyrics

i wanna follow the footprints across my lover’s stomach
i wanna call out her name before i plummet
i wish i had a map of the terrain
so i could step around the landmines
avoid the beasts under the bed they breathe at bad times
i wanna find these here so called treasures,
the pleasures, the trinkets, the never ending weekends
acknowledging, yet i’m still just a piece of the sequence
but seeing these different footprints got me needing to show my weakness
timelines, time zones,
i cross 'em with my eyes closed
memorize the landmarks and learn the cycles,
the weather patterns, how the seasons effect the
east and the west of each region, learn the cycles,
forget about the fact that many trails have been tracked
maybe its a plus that there’s a path
if this was some uncharted land
i'd have to be a smarter man
willing to travel the farthest to unravel the harvest
the natural resources are unlimited
exploration only requires some desire and initiative
take your time to find the right way to climb
it aint safe to play games with natures mind

if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never

i wanna ride a train up my lovers arm
stop off at the brain to hop out and find out what’s going on
cut through trees and ride through rocks
and synchronize the universal sundial to my watch
i've seen a lot, but not quite as much as her
to top it off the memory and the imagination blur
but i know she’s been put through hell,
i can feel it
and i know she’s touched heaven as well,
trying to steal it
it came on and it taught her a song
it strung her along and it caught her when the guard was gone
now till the break of dawn, she’s trying to feel that fix
and all her family and friends is trying to seal them lips
but i aint dumb
i can hear that train come from miles away
setting obstacles to stop the arrival
i’m gonna blow up that iron and wood road
from what i understood those be the orifice of its survival
my recital? another tantrum
because she's highly excitable
all swinging moves at random
no happy endings always off to a bad start
addictive, voyeuristic to the track marks

and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it (never)
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never leave it
and if i could show you, you would never

unless cheeseburgers' right, here's my take

guy loves girl. really loves girl, doesn't give a shit that she's chaotic and that shit's gonna hit the fan.

but it's not about a drug addiction, it's about a chaotic girl with addictive tendencies. he's the addiction she's picked up this time. in that, he can read all her patterns and has seen what she's gonna do, but can't grasp the reasoning behind it as he's still holding back (i.e. both of them have been hurt before).

this brings in the chorus, where the lyrics above have a line wrong. at the end of each chorus "it" changes to "me." a sort of, "if i be completely honest with you, you would never leave me" but the parallel being "if i opened up, you would tear me to pieces and it would be the end of us."

...so he wants to understand her better.

the end, the "train coming" is the final collapse because it's a chaotic relationship.

anyone here who's been close with someone with an addictive personality knows exactly what i'm talking about. this song is abuot the conflicting pair of impulses, one to run as far as you can and the other to see close you can get. "how close can you get to the flame before you get burned?"

actually madhattin, cheeseburgers is correct in a way. the best thing about music is you can interpret a song any way you want, it all depends on how ur mind works. This song is considered by slug to be "an ode to hip-hop" in this song you notice the multiple lines that say "if i could show you, you would never leave it." Now go and listen to the song "Fuck You Lucy" and the women singing and the beginning and end of the song are saying "it leave never would you you shouw could i if." which if you...

I read all your meanings. And I agree with them. But now for my meaning. Let's keep his "lover" as a bi-entity, it can either be hip-hop or a women. Throw away the 'must be this or that' perception. With that said, I think it's obvious that slug is touching on the exploration of "her". She's a head-case, she's complicated, she's experienced a lot, and so has he. There were others who tried to explore "her". And it seems like Slug feels like he is going to be the one to conquer this mission. He is going to "take his time and find the right way to climb". And once he encounters the obstacles he'll "cut through trees, and ride through rocks". Meaning to me, he is willing to dedicate his time to persevere where many fail to travel... through her beautiful complications; her neuroses; her flaws; her addictions; her misunderstood side. *Slug loves the hurt women... wtf do you think all his songs are about!? Bleeding Heart's Club? Lucy IS Hip-Hop! God Loves Ugly!?

Slug connects with the complicated, because he himself is conscious of all his complications. Hence, he writes conscious rap. Deep-thinking rap... so when you say there can be multiple meanings I have to agree. That's exactly it.

But I believe the themes he wants to try and communicate are as follow: Exploration of complicated women which can also be hip-hop; Hip-hop is slug's complicated lover. Can we agree to that? Slug's chorus seems to be his claim that he is obviously the right man for this head-case... only if he could show her; only if she chose to see.

I like that explanation, alot. like i said in my reply above to madhattin, notice the connections to his songs, its all just a mind game with what hes trying to say and i love that. like the connection with the chorus in this song and the women singing in the song Fuck You Lucy!

when i first heard the song i thought it was about being completely in love with a girl. no matter whats shes done in the past, or her current flaws.

like when he says "i wanna follow the footprints across my lover’s stomach....i wish i had a map of the terrain so i could step around the landmines avoid the beasts under the bed that breathe they bad times" i think hes talking about being with someone whos already been madly in love with someone. and that hes trying to understand completely. learning her fears and weaknesses. he wants to do the things with her that she loved to do before. but with him now.

now i kinda think it might have to do with a girl whos got a heroin problem. the train metaphor, and the chorus play into that a lot.

Yeah the ending definately hints at an addiction, and I'm thinking heroin as well. It seems like people around her are aware of it. He's in love with her, and wants to help her...

now till the break of dawn, she’s trying to feel that fix and all her family and friends is trying to seal them lips but i aint dumb i can hear that train come from miles away setting obstacles to stop the arrival

The chorus is simply haunting.

OK, damn. First off, I can't believe no one has commented on this fucking song. This song is amazing... it's about loving a woman so much, that every imperfection is a perfection, every wrong is a right with him. I want to be loved this way.

nah ur wrong... its about him loving a girl who has had a fucked up life, seen a lota bad shit.. and she uses some kind of drug not specified to cover up the pain.. everyone knows but nobody's willing to admit it. he loves her though, ur right about that

n also he says "if i showed you, you would never leave it"... meaning shes got an addictive personality, desperate to feel human, using whatever she could to 'feel good'.. even if for a minute

u nd this guy r wrong slug used to do heroin u fucking idiots the entire song is filled with metaphors bout it (wish i had a map to step around these landmines) landminds-heroin tracks (universal sundile to my watch) seringe shadow down his arm learn your shit and listen to lyrics before u ever comment on slug

I love this song, so much, it's addictive.

yeah i see the addiction thing tying into there as well...theres a lot of hints at that.

my favorite line is "forget about the fact that many trails have been tracked/maybe its a plus that there’s a path" and what follows that. to me, that's talking about a girl who has had a bit of a sexual history and the guy is trying to not let it bother him.

i think hes talking about a drug too, pretty creative, reminds me of some of nirvanas shit.
