Winning Days Lyrics

The winning days are gone
Because I know just where I'm seeing
Was giving as I know
I can't hear

'Cause underneath there's gold
I'll need to get around to find it
When I want to go
I can dream
I've been trying
All my time

I'm just seeing it right
'Cause it could be the land that's over me
So I just want to let breathe

The winning days are gone
Because I know just where I'm seeing
Was giving as I know
I can't hear

'Cause underneath there's gold
I'll need to get around to find it
And when I want to go
I can dream
I've been trying
All my time

I'm just seeing it right
'Cause it could be the land that's over me
So I just want to breathe

Get up and go outside
It can help your mind too
Get up don't hide away

'Cause I know where there's gold
I've seen you down when I was flying
I'm sinking like a stone
I can't breathe
I've been trying

This song is about pursuing something great, but you never come around to it cause you're still dreaming. You're hesitating, and whether you like it or not you're trying and pushing time. The reality is all you needed to do was get up and try for it rather than being passive and dreaming. That's why the winning days are over...the light towards the gold is fading with time.

Craig and Patrick in an interview:

Craig: “ Winning Days is Number 6 – it’s the start of the second side if you were thinking about it as an old record – and it’s about what you think about at different times, how you feel different. It wasn’t really a song when I first wrote it, more just a poem really. That was a really long time ago. It’s also one of our best songs, I think. Although the words can sound a bit kind of down, the melody is happier.” Patrick: “ When Craig originally played me the song and I had a cassette copy, I wrote down the title as ‘Wedding Days’. I thought Stone Roses at the time. The up-beat end section has incredible Beach Boys-style harmonies, very complex but rhythmically compatible with each other.”

I agree completely with artfulfoo

This song is severely underrated, it's a classic.

By the way, those lyrics are wrong. Here are the corrected ones:

The winning days are gone Because I know just where I'm seeing Was giving eyes I know I can hear

Cause underneath there's gold I'll need to get around to find it And when I want to go I can dream I've been trying All my time

I'm just seeing it rise Cause it could be the land that's over me So I just want to let it breathe

The winning days are gone Because I know just where I'm seeing Was giving eyes I know I can hear

Cause underneath there's gold I'll need to get around to find it When I wanna go I can dream I've been trying All my time

I'm just seeing it rise Cause it could be the land that's over me So I just wanna let it breathe

Get up and go outside It can help your mind too Get up, don't hide away

Cause I know where there's gold I didn't know when I was flying I'm sinking like a stone I can dream I've been trying

I love this song. It's like the Homesick of the Winning Days Album. It's about growing older and how you can't do everything you've wanted, or try the things you've wanted anymore. As you age you have to obtain more responsibility and such.

Haha, artfulfoo's explaination seems more accurate than Craig's. I love love love this song, and I think it can be about a few things if you think about it. Getting older, persuing dreams, etc. like everyone has said all seem to be a part of it.

Nah, it's unmistakably Beach Boys inspired. The first thing I thought of when I heard this song was 'Pet Sounds.' As a matter of fact, I usually play 'You still believe in me' to chase this song - the two go together disturbingly well.

That in' line. That last 'I've been trying' the song closes with - gets me. Every ing time.

Great song.
