Keep Me in Your Heart Lyrics

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for a while
There's a train leaving nightly called "When All Is Said and Done"
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sha-lalala-lala-li-lalala-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-lalala-lala-li-lalala-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for a while

Hold me in your thoughts
Take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes
Keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north up to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for a while
These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for a while

Sha-lalala-lala-li-lalala-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-lalala-lala-li-lalala-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while

Keep me in your heart for a while

Heartbreaking lyrics. I heard his interview on NPR about this recording. He said he'd be exhausted and fall asleep on the couch. Each time he woke up he looked around, wondering if he'd died in his sleep; the pain reminded him he was still alive.

The song is uncharacteristic of WZ i think. i think he knew it was not one of his best songs, per se, but he had to be conscious of the power it would have over his friends and fans. it was like a final gift, a momentary tearing down of his wall of sarcasm, intellect, politics, and rock and roll savvy moments before he died. he lamented his choice to write a pity song, but he did not regret including it on the album, as his friends were many and powerful, his fans were super important, and he had a loving family.

i believe the inclusion of "for a while" rather than just saying "keep me in your heart forever" is very characteristic of him. he was so conscious of his mortality, and the fickleness of memory. he was also conscious of the fact that it was only his doing that brought his death around. it always reminded me of the reluctant laugh in the middle of a good cry a woman would have. its a last favor he asks before a death everyone but himself would consider tragic, and i think we'd be remiss in ignoring his last request.

@scumbagstyle I am so surprised that nobody has gotten into your shit for saying that "it was only his own doing that brought his death around" -- mesothelioma, the cancer that took him from us all, is caused by exposure to asbestos, and not by the excesses typical of his life, Who knows where he may have been exposed to asbestos - in a house he lived in at some point during his life, in a school he went to, in a seedy LA hotel; the list could go on and on. But his death was not caused by anything...

easily the most moving song ive ever heard.. his emotions are right out there on his sleeve.. even if he did say this seemed to him to be a woe is me song

One of the most tender of Warren's songs. The feeling of being completely used and abused by life to the point Where love is your only refuge. It affects me any time I listen to it.

I agree except for the used & abused part. I always got the feeling he was remembering pleasant times. "When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun," "when you're doing simple things around the house"

I just recently lost my aunt from cancer and i played that song for myself when i learned that she died. It helped me to deal with her death and to remember her in the way that she was a kind and loving person. That song help me keep her memory alive by keeping her in my heart for a while.

Thak you Warren for that amazing song!

@jeffd12 This song reminds me of my mother's death from lung cancer.. Like you, I find this song helpful

Has it been almost a year and a half already? Sadly and understandably the final song of Warren Zevon's life and carreer. It was the last song on the album to be recorded. It was recorded in his living room with the rest of his family. He was holding hands with them around a table and singing his swan song into the desktop mic. Vh1 did a special on the recording of the album I think anyone should watch it. There is so much that can be said about the man and his music that "Keep Me in Your Heart" goes without needing to be said. I think this may be slightly more beautiful and poignant than "Tears in Heaven". RIP Warren Zevon. Jan 24, 1947 - Sept. 2, 2003.

This song was so helpful this year, my family lost some greatly loved members and "Keep Me in Your Heart" helped to ease the pain. Warren Zevon's death left a hole in the songwriting world.

"Shadows are fallin' and I'm runnin' out of breath" The disease that Warren died from, Pleural Mesothelioma, is a lung cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos. If left untreated, the cancer quickly expands throughout the chest cavity, eventually crushing aside the lungs and other organs. It is horribly similar to being slowly suffocated over a period of months.

This song is about the final 'acceptance' stage of dying. As he is suffering through his final breaths, he asks the people he loves to remember him fondly. He tells them he still loves them, but staying alive is becoming too difficult. Soon he will run out of steam, and the wheels will quit turning.

My father recently passed away from his own pleural mesothelioma. If this song tears at your heart, I beg you to donate a couple bucks to marf.org in Warren's name, and maybe we can save another family from this horror.

Finally, Warren's son Jordan sang live at MARF's last symposium. Warren would have been proud.
