| Neil Young – Razor Love Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I always assumed the song was written for his daughter. Why? "I got to bet that your old man" Here he refers to himself as a father, not as a boyfriend/husband because he also sings "Turned you loose, your mama, too. There wasn't a thing that you could do." Children are not in a position to negotiate. He left his daughter and her mother. They are the silhouettes at the window when he leaves them to go back on the road. But her arms welcome him back every time in spite of that. It's daddy, after all. He feels warmth "by the little things you say" - the musings of a child are often heartwarming. At the same time, she can't stay young forever. He'll have to leave again and it hurts both of them. "It's a razor love that cuts clean through." |

| Alejandro Escovedo – Golden Bear Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I think Golden Bear is a euphemism for Hepatitis C. That's the creature that's in his blood. He doesn't know when he contracted it - or why the disease wants to make its hosts gravely ill. Escovedo is a fighter (stubborn as a tree trunk) and he survived the disease. Yet, he's not free from the memory that he could have died. He dreams about it. The last verse could be his lingering fear of the disease. Or the dream could be an acknowledgement to those who helped him while he was ill. (My brothers battled out behind me and formed a circle 'round my grave.) I picture the brothers forming a circle with their backs to the grave to keep danger out and protect him from death. |

| Silversun Pickups – Here We Are (Chancer) Lyrics | 12 years ago |

My thought is the song is directed to an audience who is unfamiliar with the band. The"million leaves" could be a literal description of what he sees from the stage of an outdoor music festival. He had dreams of being a performer, but it hasn't measured up to his expectation. He has one chance to move the audience. If I was sitting on the lawn listening to these guys, that line would make my ears perk. There they are - the least I could do is listen. And if you've already made up your mind that you don't like the band, well, it certainly is "the right time to lose you." |
