So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Take a knife and carve it in,
Want to see your faults,
As a part, of your pretty skin,
Everyone has a tragedy,
I want you to wear yours in pain
Oblivion, can no longer shade you,
Reminded by the tattered tissue
(blend in)
Bleak silence
Errors stigmatized in you,
A weak worn out friend
There's nothing left for me,
Again and again
Your face reminds me of a bleak future,
Despite, the absence of hope,
I give you this sacrifice
You're so far, behind
Be my hero,
Drift away,
Save yourself,
Don't end up zero,
I will crawl,
Into your vault,
Past snakes, and all of your thoughts,
Living, fearless,
Your world inside slowly redesigned
I deny any reminisce of us
I'm on a new mission
I find myself in the future
A trace of the past cannot be found
Want to see your faults,
As a part, of your pretty skin,
Everyone has a tragedy,
I want you to wear yours in pain
Oblivion, can no longer shade you,
Reminded by the tattered tissue
(blend in)
Bleak silence
Errors stigmatized in you,
A weak worn out friend
There's nothing left for me,
Again and again
Your face reminds me of a bleak future,
Despite, the absence of hope,
I give you this sacrifice
You're so far, behind
Be my hero,
Drift away,
Save yourself,
Don't end up zero,
I will crawl,
Into your vault,
Past snakes, and all of your thoughts,
Living, fearless,
Your world inside slowly redesigned
I deny any reminisce of us
I'm on a new mission
I find myself in the future
A trace of the past cannot be found

Hmm, what kind of annoys me is that he actually says... "You take a knife and carve it in"
Yet the lyrics say... "Take a knife and carve it in"
If you include the "you" it's more of a positive song. If you read it the way it is written in the lyrics, it seems as if he's telling him to take a knife and carve it in. But he certainly says "you". So I think he's actually saying the guy he's talking about takes a knife and carves it into his skin, rather than him telling this person to do so. Just listen, he definitely says "you".
but the singer also say's: 'every one has a tragedy, I want you to wear yours in pain/vain (dunno the alst word) '
yea, i love the "Bleak silence, errors stigmatized in you..." part too. It's so powerful. The whole "be my hero..dont be zero" crap disappoints me though...:(
Great song, the lyrics are awsome! Ok their not very "happy", but ok, if you want that go listen LP and over crapp.
Well, not dificult to guesse, this song is about a friend cutting him self open, and the singer can't stand the fact that the friend does that kind of nonsens. But the singer had sympathy for that person (Behinh be my hero). But finaly the cutting of that friend took him to far and he died...
That's how I picture the song, maybe very wrong :p
@Kaio I'm not sure, he says i want to wear yours in pain. Doesn't that mean he wants to help his friend by taking his troubles onto himself?
"Linkin Park is more emo than this"...
"You're so far Behind be my hero"
hmmm...are you trying to make sense of the song through riddles?
He does say you but he improvised that on the day of recording
It sounds to me that the narrator/singer is not a person but the feeling that makes people become desperate, cut themselves or even let them commit suicide. (I will simply call it "the feeling" ;)
In the first paragraph it sais that the person made mistakes and he/she should cut their skin that eyerybody can see it. (Altought it might not be their own faults, but the people think they are.) "The feeling" in a way forces them to do that.
The chorus sais that the person is burned out and has no hope left. For "the feeling" is nothing left to destroy ("A weak worn out friend There's nothing left for me") and it offers the person the only way out...suicide ("Despite the absence of hope I give you this sacrifice")
In the next Paragraph again "the feeling" tries to persuade the person to cut her/himself to sleep ("drift away") Better be dead than burned out ("dont end up zero") And "the feeling" sais that it will not help ("cause i'll look the other way"). But I don't know exactly what to do with "You're so far Behind be my hero"
Last Paragraph describes how the person turned into such a desperate person. "The feeling" sneakes into the thoughts of someone and leaves there a "hotbed of virulence" so that every bad feeling or tragedy the person suffered once in life becomes an insuperable problem. So the psyche changes completly and the person only sees one way out of this.
My personal interpretation of this song. Sounds logical to me altought I cant figure out "You're so far Behind be my hero". Maybe to encourage the person in its plan...
this song has horrible lyrics, the only exception being that first paragraph. in flames, you really let me down this time. instrumentals are decent IMO
i dont know..."leaving a hotbed of virulence" is pretty awesome..
you havnt heard this album till you play on a good car stereo with the bass up..the drums and low tone just kick ass..i love the way "Bleak silence Errors stigmatized in you A weak worn out friend There's nothing left for me"
is sung..
the only part i dont like is the gap between far and behind..how behind is part of the next line...
"Again and again Your face reminds me of a bleak future Despite the absence of hope I give you this sacrifice.." IMO, it's lines like this that turn me on to a song. Esp. since this excerpt can apply to most anything, whether it's about a relationship with a family member or significant other. Plus the song is powerful, whether you study the lyrics or not!
MY GOD I LOVE THIS SONG!!! I think its one of their best the singing was good the music was good but there was only 1 thing about the song i didn't like... I HATE THE LYRICS!! THEY ARE TERRIBLE LYRICS!! they are depressing...but the "Song" it self and vocals are very good!!
