Am I Awake? Lyrics
Am I awake?
What time is it?
When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
The coffee's cold, did I forget to drink it yet
Did I forget?
My clothes are wet I don't remember drinking it
When I get through this part
Will the next one be the same
Will I be wondering
If I'm awake?
These are not the clothes I had on when I went to bed
And something else besides my hair is growing from my head
And when I close my eyes it looks the same as when I open them again
Am I awake?
What time is it?
Is it that time again?
Wasn't it already then?
So does it have to be
The time it was again
When I get through this day
Can't someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
Am I awake?
When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
When I get through this day
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
Did I forget?
My clothes are wet I don't remember drinking it
Will the next one be the same
Will I be wondering
If I'm awake?
And something else besides my hair is growing from my head
And when I close my eyes it looks the same as when I open them again
Wasn't it already then?
So does it have to be
The time it was again
Can't someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
Am I awake?
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?
Can someone tell me how
And how much longer now
Am I awake?

insomniacs that aren't used to sleeping fall asleep and can't tell if their awake or not.
This song is sung from the point of view of someone who is so tired they don't know what they're doing. Having dealt with some really tedious college schedules that involved lab classes that would sometimes go from 9 PM to 5 AM the next morning, I know the feeling well, you're so disoriented you have no idea what is going on. "My shirt is wet I don't remember drinking it" might suggest the person singing fell asleep for just a split second and splashed their drink over themselves. This song was fittingly used for promos of the TLC show "Resident Life," a show about doctors that just became residents and were having to deal with the hectic schedules.
It sounds to me more like someone who is stuck in reality against their will; someone who is stuck in the same mindset and task and can't get out. Perhaps that reality is 9-5 drudgery or some other compulsory task they find dissatisfying.
i dont think this is about hectic scheduals, sounds exactly like somebody whos been speeding and up for days. disoriented and forgetful and not even sure if theyre awake anymore
