Mahgeetah Lyrics

Sittin' here with me and mine
All wrapped up in a bottle of wine
Little we can do...
We gonna see it through somehow
So...now are you ready to go, my lady?

I been waitin' on the boat here
I been waitin so long
Can he see me?
Does he feel me?
Does he know me at all?
Does it shiver?
Always deliver?
Does it know me at all?

Bang! Bang! Goes the night
All wrapped up in the firelight
Don't rock bottom, just listen
Just slow down
Do...now are you ready to go, my lady?
I been waitin' on the boat here,
I been waitin' so long...

This song is not about a guitar, that's the nickname of his other "instrument".

It's a song about two people who maybe have had a few drinks and are too wasted to properly bump uglies and are each trying to figure out how to still make it happen somehow.

The guy is inside of her "boat" thinks he's been at it long enough. Boat is used as a metaphor for a lady's parts by other recording artists (tribe called quest, etc). So we can safely establish he is not alone with his guitar.

The melodic break is really something:

Initially, I thought it was the woman's perspective, and one of them could be. It could be her casting non-verbal doubts about his and it's ability to perform, and really, that would be the most clean way to interpret this. But then I noticed something:

Look closely at the lyrics in quotes, and there might be two different subjects, "it" and "he" -- it's not her and him. We are most likely talking about each other's anatomy, or an even funnier interpretation, the anatomy is being given an opportunity to think what they are each feeling.

Is that first line the woman questioning his member directly (it) or is it her boat that's doing the talking? Depending on how you read it, we could have two or four characters here, with two being their anatomies weighing in. The playful and coy nature of the song makes me think that's likely.

Anyway,

Then it goes back to him back in his head, his strategy, and he's talked himself into slowing down, but he also thinks she's the one that's not ready to go and is shifting the blame

(alternative bonus theory, both compatible)

The bottle of wine and the firelight are obviously the "wrapped up" condom -- meaning there might be no drinking involved and something different is making this situation complicated. The drinking idea is supported by "rock bottom" but in the context it could also mean finishing too soon.

So what's the other tricky element at fault here? There are two hints: The lady wonders if it could just be cold in the room (does it shiver?) and he starts the song early with "Little we can do"

So the protagonist could also be about a drunk man who also has a very small... guitar.

[Edit: Basically, it's a masterpiece]

okay....does anyone know anything about why the song's name is mahgeetah? i'm pretty sure it's just a name. i looked it up on wikipedia and googled it. no luck. just to say, this is me and my boyfriend of 1 year and 7 months "song"

it's a phonetic spelling of "my guitar." i think he's just trying to be kind of goofy.

bang! bang!, goes the night all wrapped up in the firelight don't 'rock bottom' just listen just slow down

'can he see me? does he feel me? does he know me at all? 'does it shiver? always deliver? does it know me at all?

Jimmie, I'm pretty sure it's "Does IT shiver" not "Does HIS shiver" from memory of reading the cd sleeve (it has the lyrics written in it). Hmm someone downloaded the album!

"Mahgeetah" is a mondegreen for "my guitar." (If you're uncertain what a "mondegreen" is, just Google it.)

The song seems to basically be about a guy in a romantic setting with his lady, but all he can think about is his guitar. The chorus goes: "Can he see me? Does he feel me? Does he know me at all?" "Does it shiver? Always deliver? Does it know me at all?"

The first three lines are spoken from the perspective of the girlfriend, wondering if the guy loves her. The last three lines are spoken from the perspective of the guy, wondering about his guitar. Their minds are on two totally separate things. It's such a guy song, I love it. Anyway, after these six lines, Jim James (the lead singer) sings "aaaaaaaaaaaaah, mahgeetah, mahgeetah" "Mahgeeta" is a mondegreen for "my guitar." He has said that he did it for no other reason than rock singers just sort of slur their words sometimes in service of the rock.
