The Shadowlands Lyrics

God please send the rain
Yeah, and send it soon
Let it flood through the houses
Into Judy's room
With a father on amphetamines
Her mother hides the pearls
Reach out into the darkness
And find my little girl
Because she's angry like a salesman
That couldn't make a sale
She threw the wedding rings in the sewer
And damned them all to hell

Please lead her to the mountain
That you fashioned out of sand
While the roaches climb the walls
Of the hotel where he calls
Most people never find a love
Most people never find a love
Sometimes you just can be a man
Sometimes you just can be a man
When your living in the darkness
Of the shadowlands
The shadowlands

i think the shadowlands would be that place you go to after loss. where everything is just a shadow to your eyes, like its always on the periphery. the first verse just says that she had a rough life. then she's gone, and he's asking god to take care of her, and saying while he takes care of her he'll be forsaken in a hotel room with roaches. he recognizes that "some people never find a love" and he knows that he did, so he "just can be a man" while he mourns in the shadowlands. at least thats my take.

@swallowedthefly It is. That's what I called the year after I got divorced. It was a dark, murky, lonely time with moments where I felt like I didn't know which way was up. But I'm so thankful for that time, and thankful not to be in it anymore.

I agree. This song is just amazing. I love when the guitars come in at the end of the song and it keeps building up. Beautiful lyrics as well.

except, i disagree with the lyrics somewhat -

'cause she's angry like a salesman who just couldn't make a sale threw the wedding rings in the sewer and damns them all to hell

......

sometimes you just can't be a man sometimes you just can't be a man when you're living in the darkness of the shadowlands

just a few words different...

One of his best songs. I'm in awe, I can't even begin to comment. just simple and wonderful, anyone who thinks Ryan can't write should listen to this. if they still don't get it I don't think we are bound to agree on much else.

I can't believe there are only two comments on this song. By far Adams's best song yet.

I don't know where he gets the inspiration for this stuff. The lyrics for this one are real; they're coming from somewhere.

It conveys the strains of a relationship (looks like a marriage to me) that's going nowhere fast.

Yes, yes, yes. Single-handedly makes the price of Love is Hell Volume 1 more than worth it. I'm not sure on the meaning, but the emotion seems to combine frustration and apathy. Marriage and heartbreak seem to be the focus. I maintain that rain is a metaphor for tears of God, as if to ask for pity.

Then again, this song could have left out the lyrics entirely and I still would have felt it. It's that brilliant.
