Above Ground Lyrics

Underground I'm waiting
Just below the crowded avenue
Watchin' red lights fading out of view

Oh the air feels heavy
Everything just passes by
And I think that I'm a little shy

Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday

Drawing lines above my head
But the fan keeps spinning over me
Just my thoughts to keep me company

Now I know I'm ready
Pour the night into a glass
Can I sip it slow and make it last

Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday

Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday

Almost two years and nobody has commented on this? That's sad, apparently not that many have a taste for Norah Jones' beautiful work.

The meaning? As far as I can tell, it's about a girl who is hiding her love for the guy of her dreams. She's basically hiding herself and her emotions away from the world - keeping them underground in her soul. This girl is trying to gain enough courage to tell this guy what she thinks.

She wants to meet him 'outside, above ground.' She wants to find a place where she can be open about her true thoughts, and let her fears go. 'I see you on your way, I'll be with you someday.' He is in this place she wants to be, where if he shared feelings he'd be also free to say so. She knows she'll eventually get the courage to talk to him, but as for right now she keeps hidden.

This is just how I see the song. Perhaps someone else sees something else in it...?

I think that the song is fairly straightforward. She wants someone, but she's too nervous to actually approach this person, although she does have hope that she will someday. She keeps longing to go above ground and finally be with this person, she just needs to work her way up to it.

My favorite line is "pour the night into a glass/can I sip it slow and make it last?" It's a beautiful way of describing going out for a drink with someone and hoping it doesn't end. This is my favorite song of hers.

I think it might be just a simple ode to NYC... Living under the street level... Getting ready for the night to come...
