Already Dead Lyrics
Time wears away
All the pleasures of the day
All the treasures you could hold
Days turn to sand
Losing strength in every hand
They can't hold you anymore
Already dead to me now
'Coz it feels like I'm watching something die
Love looks away
In the harsh light of the day
On the edge of nothing more
Days fade to black
In the light of what they lack
Nothing's measured by what it needs
Already dead to me now
'Coz it feels like I'm watching something dyin'
All the pleasures of the day
All the treasures you could hold
Days turn to sand
Losing strength in every hand
They can't hold you anymore
'Coz it feels like I'm watching something die
In the harsh light of the day
On the edge of nothing more
Days fade to black
In the light of what they lack
Nothing's measured by what it needs
'Coz it feels like I'm watching something dyin'

This is one brilliant and sad song. Sea Change as a whole is a biliiant album. What strikes me most is the line "Nothing's measured by what it needs". For me it descibes the fact that no matter how much you need that other person, the need will not get hin/her to stay with you or love you again. He's watching his relationship and love die. My interpetation, I could be wrong though
this song comes off of Beck's breakup CD. This is evident. It's a horrid song. Brilliant, but horrid. "Already dead to me now 'Coz it feels like I'm watching something dyin'"
This song is a big part of why I love Sea Change so much. Unlike in previous albums, where the lyrics were mostly nonsense, almost every song on this album has a fairly specific meaning.
This song is about knowing that a relationship is already dead, and nothing can be done to save it. All you can do now is watch it die.
My band may be breaking up, and our last practice was like wathing something dying. It works in all cases of loss that occurs over time, rather than suddenly. One day you wake up and it's already dead, even if it doesn't know it.
@ndo I feel you on that, man. Just pulled down our FB page this morning. My band of almost 10 years broke up - but not for the usual reasons. The Covid thing has just KILLED live performances and we haven't played out in almost 9 months now. It could be said we've been dead for almost a year...

beautiful song. i remember sitting on my couch last year watching beirut (a city very near and dear to my heart) being bombed, and then listening to this song and just being overwhelmed. its applicable in so many situations - the hallmark of a great song!
the statement that "it feels like i'm watching something die" is genius - simple language but complex emotions.
I love this song sooooooo much! It makes me cry everytime!
This is a brilliant song, to me is to move on with your life after a breakup with someone, to be dead for you al least emotionaly.
Hey, I've been there. I know exactly what this feels like. You don't have to break up with someone to feel this.
I agree with all of the statements above.
The line "Nothing's measured by what it needs" has always piqued my interest. I have always interpreted it as meaning that Beck's needs go unfulfilled, however strong or important they may feel.
Yeah, it IS a lot like that emotional deadness... even not just from breakups, but love leaves ya like that sometimes.
