Can You Hear Me Lyrics

Once we were lovers, can they understand?
Closer than others I was your, I was your man
Don't talk of heartaches, oooh, I remember them all
When I'm checking you out one day, to see if I'm
Faking it all

CHORUS
Can you hear me?
Can you feel me inside?
Show your love, love
Take it in right (take it in right)
Take it in right (take it in right)

There's been many others (Oo-oo-oo-oohh) so many times
Sixty new cities an' what do I, what do I
What do I find?
I want love so badly, I want you most of all
You know it's harder to take it from anyone
It's harder to fall
Can you hear me call?

CHORUS

Well, can you hear me? (yeah)
Can you feel me inside? (I do)
Show your love, show your sweet, sweet love
Show me your love

Take it in right (take it in right)
Take it in right, yeah (take it in right)
Take it in right to your love life, baby
Take it in right, to your love life
Take it in right, take it in right, right to your love life
Take it in right, ah
Take it in, take it in right
Right down, right down
(Why don't you take it?)
Mmmm, why don't you take it?
(Right to your heart)
Can you hear me?
(Why don't you take it?)
Can you feel me?
(Why don't you take it?)
Can you? Take it in right
(Why don't you take it?)
Wuhh, right down, right down
(Right to your heart)
Can you take it? Feel me?
(Why don't you take it?)
Down, to right down
(Why don't you take it?)
To your heart
(Why don't you take it?)
To your heart
(Right to your heart)
Take it down, take it down
(Why don't you take it? Why don't you take it?)
Take it in right
(Right to your heart)

I was introduced to this song by Brandon Flowers of the Killers. This will be my wedding song!

No matter how many people he sleeps with in all the cities he goes to, there is one that he wants to "take it in right" most of all.

This is the first time I have studied the lyrics of the Young Americans album and I must say so far this is the sexiest album, as in literally....he is screwing or someone screwing him, or he is thinking about screwing someone .... or somebody is screwing someone else. Everybody is "taking it right in" in this album....hoo...i'm getting a little flushed over here...damn!

Have this song as a duet with Cher and Bowie from her TV show back in 1975. I originally recorded it on my little panasonic tape recorder, then recorded it to cd and finally made it an mp3 which I've been playing a lot lately. Still love it as much or more than back then. You can see the clip on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeRtk2zVVCw. I've read several places that Bowie doesn't remember doing the Cher Show as it was during his drug?/sleep deprived days. I like the version from Young American's, but the duet with Cher will always be the one I love. Beautiful song!

@fyschee Sorry the link doesn't work but you can just search for Cher and Bowie on youtube. There is also a medley of oldies mixed with Young Americans from the show.

It's an amazing song from the Master. It's chilling how great he was on these love songs, it's like he only ever sang these ones! the line "When I'm checking you out one day, to see if I'm Faking it all" is beyond amazing; he went with the an exceptional choice of line here.

@KarenZevon what do you think that line means... "Checking you out one day to see if I'm faking it all"? Does it imply false love, or that the dedicatee of this song is the only one he really lives?

@jake102068 I think he means that with time passing he keeps tabs on her just to see if the feeling from the past was real, and the fact that he remembers all the heartache when he does that, shows that he in fact did not fake it and that love was the real thing.

It's agreed by most Bowie experts that this song is about Ava Cherry, who had a relationship with Bowie in this era and was a big influence on this album. She sings backing vocals on the album as well. Bowie himself stated that this is a "real love song", but he wouldn't talk about who it was written for when asked.
