These lyrics are originally by Lou Reed, they can be found on The Velvet Underground Live 1969, Vol 1. This is an early version of the song which would be revised for the VU's "Loaded.". The full version on " Fully Loaded" reissue includes the "wine and roses verse. The fleshed out version has a wider range of substance, but this original version is beautiful as a meditation on compassion, dedication, endurance of spirit, and longing. And a correction: "Heavenly wine and roses, Seem to whisper to me, When you smile." (What the hell is a "widened rose"?) |
