It's really amazing how Sampson uses metaphores like this that relate to a universal experience that most of us never think twice about.

I think it might be about break-ups or something. All the signs are there, it's right in the name! Psalm for the Elk's Lodge Last Call, the last call could be a couple breaking up and going their own separate ways. He could be trying to say that they should enjoy all those small things before they say good night, or break-up. But what the hell do I know, I'm just a 15 year old who has seen a lot in those years, I could be wrong, or I could be right...

...another beautiful song by one of my favorite canadian bands of all time. The title of the song itself explains the entire song and it is about the closing of a club and its members saying they're last goodbyes to each other knowing that they might not see each other again as well as the club.

An obvious biblic refrence, but does anyone know what to? This song could have something to do with the last supper?

The song is about two old friends meeting up in small dinner. In keeping with the theme of this album I'd say that the both of them have met under the circumstance of the death of somebody they knew (the person in Manifest, Hospital Vespers and Past Due). These two friends can't seem to find much to talk about now and perhaps never did get along that well but the singer notes that before the say goodnight the raise a grant toast for the departed one.

Massive freemasons metaphor running through this. See: 'Oh, protect our secret handshake...' and the references to members and the leader. I don't think it's literal; more of a character like in Pamphleteer. Given that Samson was in Propagandhi at a time when they had a song that repeated 'Fuck religion' over and over, I don't get the feeling he believes in a supreme being, which is a requisite for membership. I suppose that song's more of an attack of organised religion than believe in a supreme being though.

I interpret the whole thing personally as just romanticising hanging out with your friends, in Samson's brilliantly quirky style.

"Let the toast to absent members push through the ceiling, before we say goodnight."

The absent members aren't just away from the club, they're away from life (the toast "pushes through the ceiling" towards heaven). Samson--great writer that he is--connects the dying (one of the themes of the album), the passing of Canadian traditions, and the living members' hope that this won't be the last goodnight into a short and poignant line.
