Swallow The Knife Lyrics
so our open wounds will bleed until our veins run dry.
now we have to take this thorn and tear it from our side.
agitated at the fault line still agree to disagree
you're connected to the heart but tonight will set you free.
so swallow the knife
carve the way for your pride.
now our hands are tied.
the problems lie within.
so we pray for night to start over again.
even now as i write this down
our pretensions disappear.
now our impulses will bite
at the ankles of our fear.
so swallow the knife
carve the way for your pride.
now our hands are tied.
the problems lie within.
so we pray for night to start over again.
now our hands are tied.
the problems lie within.
so we pray for night to start over again.
(words are spoken words are broken down)
so lets make this night
be our best mistake.
so lets take the time
to wipe the blood away.
now our hands are tied
and our world is caving in.
now our hands are tied.
the problems lie within.
so we pray for night to start over again.
now our hands are tied
and the problems lie within.
(words are spoken words are broken down. broken down. broken down.)
now we have to take this thorn and tear it from our side.

this is my favorite song on the cd. i think its about drinking alcohol. Like someone being angry with someone else and wanting alcohol to take their troubles away
"you're connected to the heart but tonight will set you free"<---------love it so much
i think thats saying tonight that person will forget their troubles and let themselves be taken away by the drinking
"so swallow the knife"
and that is just a metaphor for drinking.
i could be very wrong or very right but thats what it means to me
IM SEEING SOTY AT WARPED TOUR WOOHOO
i think he is usin the physical wounds, and the blood to show emotional hurt. "swallow the knife to carve teh way for your pride" is basically saying how much the person he is singing about's pride and arrogance hurt. the thorn in his side in the 1st verse could be a mistake taht he has made and feels bad for, because, in the bible, Paul writes that his sin is a thorn in his side.
i love this song... i think its about any kind of addiction-- alcohol, drugs, cutting... whatever. but he's talking about giving it up... "swalow the knife" which i think is like swallowing the addiction... "tonight will set you free." and thats being set free by letting go of it.... i don't know. thats what i think
This song sounds like a problem due to an addiction. "now our hands are tied. the problems lie within." They can't do anything about what problems they have inside their heads or bodies or w/e. "so lets make this night be our best mistake. so lets take the time to wipe the blood away. " My interpretation: Let's have fun tonight but let it be our last time. wiping the blood away=fixing the drug problem?
I think that this is about a relationship. Probably one that was a very one-sided relationship.
I think that they're doing everything they can to avoid talking about the problems, but it keeps coming back to haunt them.
I think that ThoughtLikeFlames has it pretty close to what it means. But then again, the song is for the listener to interpret, and as long as they like the song, that's all that matters, right?
I agree to an extent with everyone here. I think that wiping the blood away is akin to fixing the problem whatever it may be. However, I think this song may be a little more simple. I know a lot of people find it easy to read suicide into something like this. But I really think there are a lot of lines that could be construed that way.
"so our open wounds will bleed until our veins run dry. now we have to take this thorn and tear it from our side."
Maybe the addiction are sealed wounds that he is opening through "Swallowing the Knife", and tearing the thorn for our side is like saying this is the only way to remove it, to remove ourselves.
"so lets make this night be our best mistake. so lets take the time to wipe the blood away. "
Suicide is a mistake but he sees it as the only way, therefore he feels it is a good choice to make. And wiping the blood away is fixing the addiction or problem.
The final thought in my mind that it is about suicide is this.
"so we pray for night to start over again. "
Maybe he believe 'night' is death. And that in taking his own life, he may be able to start over and do better.
Just a thought though.
pray for night to start over again, after make this night our best mistake.. i think it means that he wants to start the night over again and not make teh mistake, altough that's not reading too far into it.
First, I just want to say I grew up with these guys. They even played my high school several times. They're some of the most talented, amazing guys anyone could ever meet and I'm so glad that they're finally getting the success they more than deserve. Their sound is so different from anything out there right now. It really is. It's awesome, and SOTY kicks total ass.
Anyway, here is my take on the song. To me it's about taking a break during a fight. I know it's not looking too deep into the meaning of each line, but to me it's just about taking a break from a fight when both sides are too stubborn to admit they're wrong. The first verse seems like it could mean that two people have been fighting so long that they've bled themselves dry and now, it's time to take the fight and put it on hold for a while. Tear the thorn from one's side so to speak; let the issues that brought the fight on rest. Agree to disagree is like, let's call a truce for now, and we'll pick it up later.
Swallow the knife is like, letting it go even though it's not what you want to do. Lines get crossed, and words go too far so it comes to a point where both people have to cool off and take some time alone to heal. Praying for night to start over again, to me means that maybe after some sleep, the bad mood will be lifted and things can be talked about more rationally.
The part about making the night be their best mistake and taking time to wipe the blood away could mean that the fight was so bad, let's not have another like it. Let's make this our best mistake and now let's make it better.
This is just my interpretation as I am often the type who likes to take some time on my own to blow off some steam and relax, and clear my head when I'm in an argument because after so long my head gets clouded. That's kind of what brought this on, anyway. I had a fight with my girlfriend and was listening to the CD when the song came on. It's one of my favorites off of Page Avenue, although the whole CD is amazing.
hey does anybody kno how 2 get thier big blue monkey's cd "story of the year"
Perfect analysis crying aloud! After a similar situation I too was listening to this cd and this song just seemed to hit home somewhere. She can never "swallow the knife!" Though I knew myself what it meant, I couldn't put words to it. Nicely done!
