Shatter Lyrics

I know that I don't always realize
How sleazy it is
Messing with these guys
But something about just being with you
Slapped me right in the face
Nearly broke me in two
It's a mark
I've taken hard
And I know I will carry with me for a long long time

I don't know if I could drive a car
Fast enough to get to where you are
or wild enough not to miss the boat completely
Honey, I'm thinking maybe
You know just maybe

I don't know if I could fly a plane
Well enough to tail spin out your name
Or high enough to lose control completely
Honey, I'm thinking maybe
You know just maybe, maybe

I see it just a slight bit differently.

I think its about being surprised when you fall in love with someone and suddenly becoming very aware of your shortcomings, even when that other person accepts you for them. At the same time you put this person on a pedestal and feel you want to try and rise to their level and feel worthy of that love.

This is a classic unrequited love song with simple yet powerful senitments. Quite clearly this is a girl who usually is quite shallow and chases guys just for the physical pleasure, as we do when we're young and hormonal. But for the first time she has actually fallen in love with someone and it has "slapped her in the face, broke her in two" turned her whole world upside down, as first loves always do. She is in pain over now realising how far short she falls of ever being able to be in a relationship with him and yet she holds on to the possibility that just maybe it can happen, as we do when we're completely in love and trying to come up with anything to make it happen.

A truly beautiful song that descibes an experience I have been through and also have caused another girl to go through too. Unrequited love is one of the greatest pains in life for both the lover and the loved.

@mwantero: You're incorrect about it being "Not to list that boat completely", it is in fact "Not to miss the boat completely". Beside that, I feel that this song is definitely about a girl who has been slutty/sleazy in the past, sleeping around with as many different guys as she fancies, and now that she has met this new guy, who she realizes is much different that the others, she finally recognizes her behavior for what it has been and sees that what she really wants, but may not be able to achieve, is to give this new guy all of her, all the beautiful parts of her that she truly possesses -- the part about her doubting her ability to this comes in with the car/plane/boat bits, saying that as much as she wants to change her ways and commit fully to this special guy, she's been so set in these ways for such a long time that it may not be possible to let go of her inhibitions and shout his name from the rooftops like she knows he deserves.

Like OMGB said, by meeting this guy she realized she was being kinda sleazy, and how bad that first impression she inicially gave was. Also, I'm thinking the 'I don't know if I could drive a car/Fast enough to get to where you are' or 'I don't know if I could fly a plane/Well enough to tail spin out your name' may be her trying to get his attention or trying to reach him, but for her (for some reason) it's impossible to accomplish this. I totally feel related to this song, I'm going thru the exact same thing right now...

i don't have another interpretation, but i just love this song. While I agree it's a love song, there's something achingly unsettling about, almost sad.

I don't think it's about new love or anything positive at all. From the title, how sad the song sounds, and the first verse, I see it as about a break up - now she's being sleazy, sleeping around to get over him and all the scars he left her with. Think about it:

'I know that I don't always realize How sleazy it is Messing with these guys But something about just being with you Slapped me right in the face Nearly broke me in two It's a mark I've taken hard And I know I will carry with me for a long long time'

She's messed up cos of him, basically.

i think she has been been in a relationship with this guy and she's cheated on him repeatedly... then it hits her how badly she's been treating him and these references to driving cars, flying planes etc. are figurative references to doing the absolutely most crazy things to get his attention so she could make ammends.

Of the guys she's been messing with, she realizes she's willing to (just maybe) let herself go completely to this one.

Being surprised by feelings of wanting the person intensely but uncertain about wanting to commit to them. "I'm thinking maybe."

Maybe missed the opportunity (boat) completely and has taken it really hard and will not soon forget.

well i dont know i am really bad at trying to figure out what songs mean or whatever but ill give it my best shot: this song seem to be about hanging around some new people and being surprised at your change of pace....but not knowing if you can keep up with this new crowd. and hoping ("Honey, I'm thinking maybe") you will be able to be with these people longer if you tried. but this might not have to do with just a crowd...it could be just anything new in your life your not sure you can keep up with it. and maybe a little heartbreak in there too? (i mean, it is called "Shatter")
