Keep It Together Lyrics
when we all finally washed ashore
it was clear there was no one else around
we declared a national holiday
a chance to build it from the ground
so far away from everyone
and everything starts today
keep it together
can we keep it together
we're singing a new song now
and everything starts today
can we rise? can we get along all right?
can we miss the storm that sucked the
whole world in?
and the boats went out at night
and the choppers in the sky
they searched but they could find no trace
of us
so far away from everyone
and everything starts today
keep it together
can we keep it together
we're singing a new song now
and everything starts today
the thunder struck the clouds appeared
our fearless crew was not prepared
and pretty soon the boats came for us
half a million strong
we gathered arms we fired shells
we built a wall around ourselves
and pretty soon the spirit was a lot like
what it used to be back home
so far away from everyone
and everything starts today
keep it together
can we keep it together
we're singing a new song now
and everything starts today
it was clear there was no one else around
we declared a national holiday
a chance to build it from the ground
so far away from everyone
and everything starts today

I think this song sounds a lot like "Lord of the Flies."
could this song possibly be about columbus day? first look at the entire first verse, then random lines and phrases throughout like "we're singing a new song now," "our fearless crew," "back home." maybe? or a friend of mine said maybe september 11 but i dont really make the connection throughout, but maybe i dont know.
no i dont think its about columbus day, i think its more about the guys as a band and how theyve struggled with various factors from thier begining. like near the end where it says "the thunder struck the clouds appeared our fearless crew was not prepared and pretty soon the boats came for us half a million strong we gathered arms we fired shells we built a wall around ourselves
and pretty soon the spirit was a lot like what it used to be back home " it seems to me like this is about the struggle with fame. how at first they were kind of shocked but then they fought it off somewhat and came to terms with it and the spirit of it became like what it used to be back when they were a new band fresh on the scene.
I thought of this song in terms of the American Revolution, with the first verse relating to the Mayflower, rather than Columbus. "The boats came for us" would of course be the British. And--this is a stretch, I know--the part about the spirit being a lot like what it used to be back home could be a criticism of the way that the very intolerance that the pilgrims were fleeing has developed here, as well.
But actually, I really like the idea of it's being about the band's development. My only gripe with that is that I wouldn't consider them famous--the only people I know who have even heard of them are either friends from Tufts, or people I introduced to them!
That's not really a stretch about the spirit, that's what i thought right away so it obviously isn't that much of a stretch if we both thought that gravitydefiant. Although, I would have to argue that they are famous. Everyone around here [where i live] knows them and loves them.
in the studio journal Brian said it was about the band, and he would probably know as he wrote it.
It's about the band
this song is definitely about the guys coming together and forming a band. it's also about overcoming the obstacles as a group, to be able to do what they really want.
Maybe it is about the band. But I like it better thinking of it as a dreamlike situation, where they find a place the world doesn't know about, and build a nation, only to have it end up just like the old one when the rest of the world comes in.
@upthorn ......I think you are definitely the closest one to the true intent and meaning of this song. Many times the truth isnt as blatant or obvious as most would like to believe but your answer (I believe) is the best and most easily explainable for what is going on and the wide array of beliefs/feelings associated to the song...Most hit songs and music today (and for many years but especially today) has been ingeniously designed/written for the masses (staying open and easily interpreted as possible ) because upon hearing it he/she will be captured by it if they can...

I think this song sounds a lot like "Lord of the Flies."
OMG this is so weird... Just this week we started reading Lord of the Flies for LA class, AND i just heard this song for the first time. Put the two together and my mind is like SET on thinking that's what it is about lol. But, it does make sense to say it has to do with that, because Ralph and Piggy were trying to keep everyone together in a little government type thing.
I also think it's about keeping the band together. IDK
