i think this is about a person who has lost interest in something they once loved....they used garden as their metaphor b/c a garden takes a lot of care, and if it is not cared for they will do their own thing kinda like "now the grass is always overgrown and the weeds are choking out the sun pretty soon they'll come under the door" which is all the effect of "and you don't care"

You're right, and I think the meaning of this song is hidden well, but if you look carefully, you can find it. I'd like to point out some key words and phrases first. The most important line is "Why do you still come home anymore". To me, this is all about someone who has left their family, or is about to leave their family. The garden to me symbolizes many things. The house, the family, and most importantly, the problems of the family. In the beginning, he used to always go to the "garden" and deal with the problems (weeds). He/she would even go so far as to dig down to the roots to resolve the problem. But now, the person isn't dealing with the problems, and they continue to build up more and more. And as the problems begin to build up, he/she no longer cares. Now in the "garden" hardly any of the beautiful flowers and plants are left, and everything about the family is almost gone. Finally, the last stanza just drives the issue home that the person has given up on their family, and why are they even around anymore..."when you don't care?"

i agree with you guys . .it could be family or a long distance relationship or someeethinng. i really like the music after they're done singing. .it sounds so beautiful. and i think at the very end i hear someone say. ."change it" or something. .hmm?
I think this song is about a couple who broke up after being together a while and promised to stay friends, but one of them is not even attempting to maintain the friendship. Which is opposite of how he/she acted when they were in the relationship "you were always there..." working on and putting everything they had into the relationship.
i love the part of the song where it is just the harmonica solo... it is amazing..

this song really reminds me of england, for some reason. like an english moor. and great expectations. and thats a totoally personal take on the song, but thats the image it creates for me.
