What You Are Lyrics

And when you wanted me
I came to you
And when you wanted someone else
I withdrew
And when you asked for light
I set myself on fire
And if I go far away I know
You'll find another slave
(Chorus)
Cuz now I'm free from what you want
Now I'm free from what you need
Now I'm free from what you are
And when you wanted blood
I cut my veins
And when you wanted love
I bled myself again
Now that I've had my fill of you
I'll give you up forever
And here I go far away
I know you'll find another slave
(Chorus)
Then a vision came to me
When you came along
I gave you everything
But then you wanted more...

After going through a divorce, this song's meaning became abundantly clear to me.

I think these lyrics literally scream about a narcissist. No matter what he does for the narcicisst it's not enough. And as soon as he is gone he will be replaced by another victim of the need for narcissistic supply. A slave. Once that slave is found he is free. This is my current anthem and hits incredibly close to home. Now I'm free of what you are! Great song.

My Interpretation

@Slick_Slack42 100% my thoughts and I’m on my way out of a marriage with narcissistic husband #2. This is frighteningly real

i dated a girl who would lie to my friends and lie to me about the relationship and i did everything for her and she'd always mention how happy she was. she never seemed to want alone time, had me buy her things, had me take her places, and had me do everything for her and in the end after six months got the "i feel like we're just friends". i found out the lies after everything and realized her breaking up with me although she used the hell out of me, drained my wallet, drained my life, drained my gas, drained my friends, and just drained me in every single way and when i stopped doing things for her she dumped me. i was pissed off i had to find out that way, but it freed me...i'm free from that bitch for good. this song is pretty much the "fuck you" to whoever he was seeing...

@x32543 sounds a lot like what I just came out of. Only 8 months instead of 6. Everything you are saying about lies and using you. Sounds like she had narcissistic personality disorder. I started catching really weird behaviour and would point it out as it happened as being abnormal and maybe she should seek professional mental help. Not in an antagonizing way, but honestly worried. Youtube has some great stuff from counsellors explaining NPD. Gaslighting is the lying all the time bit. It's incredibly eerie once you realize what just happened to you. I'm gonna venture a guess...

I was walking home when I thought of another possibility. Maybe he could be singing about an adiction. Of course now that I look at it some of the lyrics fit but others don't. Oh well. Still gives more to think about, don't it?

I also think this is about an addiction. His heroin addiction, what he would do for it and how he is no longer a slave to it.

I really believe that this song is a reference to drugs, "I know you'll another slave". "Now I'm free from what you want." Most would say that this song is referring to a man that is controlled by the woman, but when you look deeper into chris cornell's many dilemnas it would be obvious that he is singing about drugs.

@BBoitwo Totally agree!

oh wow. i found a good song for a talk if i were to give one for my youth group because its talking about being yourself to one way and not being yourself for another. I like it! this could so work.
