I’m Not Going Anywhere Tonight Lyrics

I'm not going anywhere tonight,
because of something said.
I know, I know, it was meant well,
but it still hurt like hell.
Its OK, its alright
its just that I'm a little tired
of feigning interest in boys and girls
who know me and, who know me and
I wanna say, I'm gonna say,
I'm not the same, maybe in time.

I'm not making promises in life
cause of something I did tonight.
My best friend, that was way back when.
Not anything was everything then.
I know it's not fair to the fairest of them all
(you know who you are).
I've got your picture on a mirror on my wall.
I know you and, I know you and,
but you wanna say in the worst of ways
that I'm afraid and maybe too late.

I'm not going anywhere tonight
cause I don't want to, I don't have to.
It's my right to be a fucking baby sometimes.

The speaker has just gone through a phase in his life where he just grew up--he's changed (for the better, for the worse, we don't know). But, he's definitely changed, and now, he comes back to his old life--friends and family from way before. Things are different, he realizes. These friends, these people, all remind him of how he used to be...and he hates it. He doesn't want to be reminded of his past, of who he used to be, so he just wants to stay in tonight and not associate with all of these things. He's gone through so much already and he's a new, better person. Why bother going out and submersing yourself in all things past.

Beautiful, beautiful song. Totally deals with what I'm going through right now. I agree with Brucexbateman; the narrator has gone through something. I think it's actually a negative thing that happened. The way he said that it still hurt like hell, even though it was meant well. But getting back to what I was saying. I am going through this. Shit has happened, I've changed (and not in some prfound, pretentious way) and now I'm pretty much dealing with the aftermath. There are alot of days (especially in the wintertime) that I just want to stay in. Funny how both Kinsella's have songs about staying in. Tim has, A Party Able Model Of; and Mike has this song. Just thought I'd point that out. Plus, I'm a big nostalgic guy, and this reminds me of the summertime with my new girlfriend (at the time). Good shizz.

I agree with you guys about this song being about change, but I think, just like most of his songs, this is about the aftermath of a betrayal of a long lasting relationship (with "Sarah"...). I think its mostly about a time where he and Sarah had decided to possibly get back together after this betrayal, and maybe during the limbo period when promises were made to one another, he sabotaged it. This song is him realizing that the "old him" would have never done this to her, but because of something she did, he is now capable of hurting her. He has realized that they aren't the same couple, and maybe, never will be again. And I think we all can relate to the period of time after a breakup where all you want is the "old normal" of the relationship you were in, but you are forced to go out and go through the motions with friends and dating. And sometimes, this new life is such toil, you decide to just turn off the phone and abandon whatever plans you have and sit around and feel sorry for yourself instead.
