i think that this song is about a guy who gets into a relationship for the wrong reasons, not because he is in love, but because its better than being alone. he is so depressed when he is alone that once someone new comes along, he thinks he's fallen in love with them. he tries to convince himself that he really loves her but he just never will be able to stay with one person for too long. finally he realizes he's tired of the girl and leaves her, drifting along till someone else finds him. the girl realized he didnt love her early into the relationship but just stays with him, because she too would rather be with him than alone. the way pinnochio is used metaphorically is brilliant
I can't believe nobody has commented on this song. I think this is one of my favorites songs of all time. I've been through this exact thing, losing someone you love and then trying to find it again with anyone you possibly could. Nothing catches the despair that you feel in this type of situation better than the last four lines, and the strained vocals make it ten times better.
i want to know what the whispering after the track says. I have caught a little of it, the only words i can always here are "come out, come out wherever you are, come out before i drag you out." does anyone else know what is being said.
the wispering is probably from a fairy tale to fit the whole theme of the song. hanzel and gretal maybe? if you got a book of fairy tales you might be able to find what he's saying.

This, in combination with "The Recluse", are the definitive tracks of "The Ugly Organ". Tim Kasher's talent for instilling within his listeners genuine emotion is incomparable to any other artist, the best way to describe it is "simply enthralling". The introduction of both cello and organ into Cursive give Cursive the most unique sound on Saddle Creek (Other than the amusing synthpop of The Faint), let alone on their entire genre.
The song itself seems to be a metaphor for Kasher's rocky relationship, divorce and break up. While I'm not sure as to Kasher's true meaning behind the song, anything we say is speculative and therefore one's own interpretation is best.
i can totally relate to this song. i dated a driftwood once.
Maybe it's about identity... Whatever. I love the song.
The best explantion of this is, that it's like saying that you love someone, and they don't believe you and call you a liar and how you can tired of having the conversation over and over again and how bad it can hurt you
