Butcher the Song Lyrics

There's a time
And a place,
This is neither the time nor the place.
"Where do i fit in, in this jigsaw of a relationship?!?" Why should I play the fall guy to your love? I keep getting snubbed...
What dumb luck, what dumb luck."

"So rub it in... with your dumb lyrics. Yeah, that's the time and place to wring out your bullshit. And each album I'll get shit on a little more, "Whose Tim's latest whore?"
Now, that's not fair - no, that's just obscene.
I'll stop speaking for you if you stop speaking for me.

I'm writing songs to entertain,
but these people... they just want pain.
They want to hear my deepest sins
The songs from the ugly organ.
And what comes out is a horrible mess,
Songs I can't forget
What's been said and this guilt I can't shed.
It still rings in my ears - oh get out the butchers knife.

The organ's playing my song,
But the song's gone on too long.
What a day to sever such ugly extremities.
"What a lovely day." says the butcher
As he raises his arm.

this song seems to really provide us with a window to tim's soul. He is telling us about all the pressure of writing lyrics for his albums, and how the critics react. This is similar to another song off the album, art is hard, it seems like Tim is having a difficult time of dealing with the tremendous pressure of continually producing such amazing songs which all seem to stem from real life misery of tim, an in order to re produce he must also reproduce the misery which, he isn't too happy about

tim doens't like that he feels he has to deliver what the fans want. what i got from this is that he kind of wants to write what he wants, but the fans just want to hear misery and sadness.
'i'll stop speaking for you, if you stop speaking for me.' i love that lyric. this is a fucking great song.

if you read the stage directions in the booklet it lays this song out much better. his lady friend knows that when they have a argument or whatever it always turns up in tims songs where she feels she gets made to look like the bad guy. tim goes on to say that its hard because thats what the fans want to hear. i dont understand the whole butchers knife thing though anyone?

that's exactly what i was thinking star boy, but i don't think anyone else read the stage directions, that or they don't own the album which is kinda a shame.

This was written after his divorce, the Ugly Organ isnt an instrument, its his...organ. And he wants to cut it off. Yeah, hes depressed. Thats the whole "butchers knife" thing right there.

"what a day to sever such ugly extremities "

i think by organ he just means the instrument... and by ugly organ he means ugly music, or music about pain. and that is what this album is about. by butcher's knife i think he means either self-harm and self-hate or wanting to distance himself from his music, because it hurts him to write it, and he's thinking about giving it all up for good. or maybe a bit of both. any thoughts?

im not smart enough to analyze this song, but i will say that i love it.

to me, the ugly organ has a triple meaning: the instrument, his heart, and his penis. yes, his penis. the latter only in a joking way.

as for the butcher's knife the song could be akin to bright eyes' false advertisements in which conor sings about his puppet strings. and this song leads into driftwood which could mean that tim doesn't want to write what people want to hear anymore. he just wants to write what he feels.
