Good Man Lyrics
If you ever find a way to forgive me
If you ever find a way to put this all to rest
Because I'm hanging on your dress now like a little boy
When all that you wanted
All that you wanted was a good man
Right in the middle of another big fight
Boom back another one tonight
Blood never forgets but who protects the memories
When we bleed each other from the vein
And if you ever find a way to make this interesting
And if I ever find a way to stop disintegrating
Into pieces that I was, that you destroy
When all that you wanted
All that you wanted was a good man
Right in the middle of another big fight
Go to bed, it's getting light out
Why do you, why do you
Why do you always find me in the places when I'm coming down
And how do you do it when I'm overwhelmed by a violet sky
And we fly in a decayed orbit
66 thousand miles an hour goes by when we kissed
And only now do I feel your mouth
Like an ache you never knew
And it was right in front of you
Oh, how do you do it, roots in the soil untangled
Releasing in sweet summer oil
Still I recoil like mace
In all the little moments I pushed you away that I can't erase
Every moment overflows with power
66 thousand miles an hour
And if you ever find a way to forgive me
And if you ever find a way to put this all to rest
Because I'm hanging on your dress now like a little boy
When all that you wanted
All that you wanted was a good man
All that you wanted, all that you wanted
Was a good man...
If you ever find a way to put this all to rest
Because I'm hanging on your dress now like a little boy
When all that you wanted
All that you wanted was a good man
Right in the middle of another big fight
Boom back another one tonight
Blood never forgets but who protects the memories

I have been listening to 3eb for years and years and only just discovered this song.
I feel this song is all about regret and thinking about a past relationship. Regretting mistakes made, wishing things could work out.
The lyrics in this song are like most of SJ's work, beautiful.
66,000 miles an hour is the approximate speed of the planet earth as it orbits the sun. To me its a reference to time and how despite any feelings, any decisions, anything, it just keeps going on.
The line 'hanging onto your dress like a little boy' is so powerful of the feeling of longing and regret when you realise you've lost the woman you really love. It really reduces you to that.
I could go on. The lyrics are just so powerful.
Yeah jenkin's imagery in this song blow my mind:

This is so true.
This is so true.
I love this song, one of my favorties on the new CD.
this song is so beautiful. their new CD's pretty good but i always skip all the songs and go to this one. Its so amazing. rock on.
I really like the sound of this song, the lyrics really flow. awesome.
It's a great song and their new album is great. It's one of the few albums that I can listen to every song, so don't skip through all the songs to get to this one.
Simplest way to summarize thsi song. "You never really know what you have until you lose it"
Stephan Jenkins is a master lyricist; let's get that out of the way. But the part that begins "How do you do it" gives me goosebumps. Every time. It's not just the words but the melody, his voice, the bass, everything that's happening in the song during that particular moment. It's without a doubt my favorite part of the entire album, and I would have put down my $15 just for that.
Umm, as for the meaning, it's pretty obvious. What SlickSerpent said. People tearing each other apart, only to mourn what they've lost in the end. Trying to cling onto something that you once delibately destroyed. But SJ has a way of taking the trite topics and making them unique with his words, which is what he does here.
what is the bonus track after this song named, and where can i find lyrics for it?
This is one of my favourites on their new cd. My favourite line is: "How do you do it when I'm overwhelmed by a violet sky?"
I spent a while scratching my head over that line. It evokes so many different readings. I've finally settled on violet meaning something akin to thunderclouds. When a thunderstorm is threatening, the clouds turn almost purple/blackish. So he feels like he's being overwhelmed by something ominous.
Essentially I read this song as an apology of sorts for how things went wrong. He stuffed up and wants her forgiveness, and he's still pining "hanging on her dress like a little boy".
They've had their share of arguments to the point where they "bleed each other from the vein", and he points out that all the arguments do is mar the good times they had together.
He's the one with the problems: "If I ever find a way to stop disintegrating/into pieces that I was". And he notes that all she ever wanted was a 'good man' to treat her right, and not what he ended out being.
Basically it's a song that lets him come to terms with how things went wrong in a relationship. He regrets it all, perhaps not then, but in hindsight, he realises what he's lost: "when we kissed, and only now do I feel your mouth, like an ache you never knew, and it was right in front of you".
And no matter how hard she tried to be everything for him and her love ilke "sweet summer oil" he recoiled from it all. He hid from her love, and essentially pushed her away.
I just love the imagery in this song, and the depth and emotion in the lyrics.
Thanks to YtseJam for fixing the lyrics for me! I agree with glamorous*sunrise (yay for “God of Wine”!) — Stephan’s lyrics are absolutely amazing, but it’s not just that. There’s just this raw beauty about Third Eye Blind that manifests itself in this song especially. I like SlickSerpent’s explanation, too. Thanks to Ethereal Butterfly for the “violet sky” explanation - that makes a lot of sense. This is definitely one of those songs you can listen to over and over without getting sick of it.
jacques - The hidden track after “Good Man” is called “Another Life”. The lyrics at are correct.
