Wilderness Lyrics

I travelled far and wide through many different times,
What did you see there?
I saw the saints with their toys,
What did you see there?
I saw all knowledge destroyed.
I travelled far and wide through many different times.

I travelled far and wide through prisons of the cross,
What did you see there?
The power and glory of sin,
What did you see there?
The blood of Christ on their skins,
I travelled far and wide thorugh many different times.

I travelled far and wide and unknown martyrs died,
What did you see there?
I saw the one sided trials,
What did you see there?
I saw the tears as they cried,
They had tears in their eyes,
Tears in their eyes,
Tears in their eyes,
Tears in their eye.

This song is about organized religion.

It starts off talking about organized religion being a roadblock to progress in many instances through time. Then it makes a reference to Jesus Christ and his execution for being different and preaching something that was new at the time. Then it talks about the one-sided trials and 'unknown martyrs' who died...perhaps a reference to the Inquisition?

Generally agree with you, Iberian. Though "the prisons of the cross" makes me think of inquisition, so the reference to Christ, would rather mean something else... I don't know, perhaps people being punished for their beliefs (other than Christian)...

Mentioned martyrs could also be those, who voluntarily gave their lives for their religion. Like the one (Catcholic saint) killed in Mecca because of his shouted insults at Mahomet.

I think "the prisons of the cross" = "the stations of the cross" from Catholicism.

this song is badass "the christ of blood on their skins" that line is scary, i dunno why

I think that line, "the blood of christ on their skins" it's about the jews because when they were crucifing Christ they shouted: "We want his blood to fall over us and our children" or something like that hehe =)

@Xeans I think the line refers, rather, to the Romans who gambled for the garments ("skins") of Jesus.

Allways reminds me of Dante and Virgil in the Divine Comedy. Travelling through the cantos of hell/heaven.

isn't it just about how the church is using their power in the wrong way? the lines: "I travelled far and wide through many different times" just emphase that it has allways been this way and that it won't change.

I would add that this is also about the devil. Wilderness (where Jesus was tempted), the reference to angels (fallen angels) and the fact he has travelled far and wide through different times + the power and glory of sin. all of that would point to old nick (or evil)and his/its influence.

My Opinion

After fasting for 40 days Jesus was lead by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted, or just educated? Going without food like that can be like a hallucinating spirit journey. Just like reading about history it's like you are a time traveler who can not effect but just observe. Except this is not the past for Jesus, at the time, but a future, a dark and brutal future inspired by the record of his near future actions. Would he have persisted in his activities if he had been shown it's tragic results?

@jvonachen Christ literally said He didn't come to bring peace but a sword, also, the time traveler in this likely the devil trying to stop Jesus.
