I Remember Nothing Lyrics

We were strangers.
We were strangers, for way too long, for way too long,
We were strangers, for way too long.
Violent, violent,
Were strangers.

Get weak all the time, may just pass the time,
Me in my own world, yeah you there beside,
The gaps are enormous, we stare from each side,
We were strangers for way too long.

Violent, more violent, his hand cracks the chair,
Moves on reaction, then slumps in despair,
Trapped in a cage and surrendered too soon,
Me in my own world, the one that you knew,
For way too long.
We were strangers, for way too long.
We were strangers,
We were strangers, for way too long.
For way too long.

"Everyone's living in their own little world. When I was 15 or 16 at school, I used to talk with my mates and we'd say: 'As soon as we leave, we'll be down in London, doing something nobody else is doing.' Then I used to work in a factory, and I was really happy because I could daydream all day. All I had to do was push this wagon with cotton things in it up and down. But I didn't have to think. I could think about the weekend, imagine what I was going to spend my money on, which LP I was going to buy... You can live in your own little world." -Ian Curtis

I just want to know if that crashing sound close to the beginning was intentional or an accident. Or maybe it was a spur-of-the-moment rage and somebody threw a glass against the wall or floor.

I think this song is about his epilepsy. It's about getting to know his epilepsy better,

Definitely about the divide between people, everyone is very detached in society, and I find building relationships has been replaced for hostility and angry glaring. Have you ever sat on a subway and tried to make eye contact with someone? It's hilarious.

In any event, this is my absolute favorite Joy Division song, so beautifully haunting.

I agree. It's a good song, but then again the band was incredible...and its lead singer an amazing talent.

I already know quite a lot about the backstory of Ian, and I get the impression that his marriage was failing as there was a lot of distance between him and Debby, he feels frustrated with the decisions he's made, maybe it was marrying at age 19? Having a child at 22? Locking himself into a mortgage very early in adulthood?

It's almost as if Ian deeply regrets these decisions, and he's deeply rooted himself into commitments that he doesn't want to fulfill anymore. It would make sense as he was having an affair. Perhaps he felt as if his marriage was a complete mistake, and he shouldn't have had a child with Debby... at least at such a young age.

Throughout Unknown Pleasures it's as if he is expressing his deep guilt about not wanting to fulfil his family duties anymore... he wanted to be free of it and discover himself a bit more, but he also still wanted to be in the lives of Debby and their kid. Debby probably didn't want anything to do with him after she found out about the affair.

This song in particular is the expression that actually, him and Debby never really knew each other that well at all in the first place. Heartbreaking.

Ian's suicide was probably due to all of this, the impending divorce proceedings, anger from Debby, new partner, new place to live in, and the stress of the American tour - I think he really didn't have the mental fortitude to handle it all of these huge things in his life at the same time, hence he killed himself to relieve that pain.

@Unknown867 well, that and his worsening epilepsy and the endless, useless drugs doctors had him on. Along with his deep depression

I think it's about him and his epilepsy. He feels like two different people and is coming to terms with it. He remembers nothing that happens during the seizure.

Two people who never knew each other. Too many differences between them. Perhaps they met before hence the title...

In my opinion this is written from the perspective of someone who is in a relationship but they are too preoccupied with their misery, too withdrawn in their own world to allow the other person to become anything more than a stranger. I think most of Ians lyrics are about himself so this probably refers to his relationship with Debby. And this line:" Get weak all the time, may just pass the time" refers to giving in to the tempation of infidelity.

It sounds more like "for far too long" to me.

Sounds like two people meeting for some terrible reason, having not known each other before but suddenly meeting. Perhaps criminal and victim...

knowing/seeing someone but not talking to them may cause tension between two people. cool song

Supposedly written by Ian about his relationship with his wife Debby. Apparently the first time she heard it (when Ian brought a test pressing to play for her at home) she freaked out and became upset because she immediately knew it was about her/them. Only one chord (E) in the entire song if I'm not mistaken (they slide to D every so often but it's mostly in an E-note drone).
