From what I have read this song was titled "Granny" even before it was written. I don't know if the title necessarily fits anything but the first verse of the song, but it doesn't matter too much. All in all this is just a great song... However I still can't manage to put my finger on exactly what it is about.
On Storytellers Dave says its named Granny for no particular reason, although there seem to be implications of him speaking to an older wiser person (old and wise with clouded eyes).
I think that the first verse is him meeting up with his grandmother ..."hope i find you feeling healthy.." and he talks to her about love. He feels like since she is old and wise, (I always thought it said you CAN see what I CAN'T ...) she sees through the beauty and lust that youth embraces and can get carried away with so many times. The rest of the song is talking about meeting up with this pretty girl... Just a thought. IM me if you love Dave too....
this is one of my favorites by dave....I think it deals with the insecurities we all face when we love someone. We shouldn't have doubts but rather trust in our partner, but sometimes that's hard. I love the part about being controlled by a pretty face- amazing- wishing the outer beauty was not at all important in a partner, easier said than done
dave wrote this song a week after he met his future wife... pretty friggin amazing if you ask me. i love this song its also one of my favorites... there is no way i could ever write something as great as this about a girl... dave you kick ass
I love this song!!! I love how they all sing the 'love' and 'baby' party together it sounds so cool!!! I've become obsessed with this song recently and listen to it all the time. Does anyone know where else i might find a copy of this besides on Listener Support?

i really don't think dave is talking to his grandma in the beginning.....the whole idea of meeting this person and asking how they are is Dave's way of trying to find out and know his loved one better.....just my opinion though
Granny actually has absolutley no relevance to the song. When Dave can't think of a name for a song, he'll ask a friend of his, I think it was the lighting guy, but i cna't remember off the top of my head, but that guy will give it a name, he's named songs like "Blue Water Baboon Farm" and "Heathcliff's Haiku Warrior". First I'd like to say, and I mean no offense to anyone, but I think that this is not a great translation of the lyrics. Second, I'd like to say that I think this song is a metaphor for how a "granny" sees love, unconditional and without question, as opposed to how many young people see it, conditional and with requirements. I think "granny" is telling us to love freely and without limits, much like your 'granny" prabably loves you.
